A negative development, says Jonas Arvidsson, marketing manager for timber at Norra Skog.

Jonas Arvidsson, marketing manager for timber at Norra Skog, believes that the reduction in logging in Sweden is creating concern in the market and dampening the desire for new investments.

When Jonas Arvidsson summarizes 2024, he notes that forest owners' profitability has continued to increase, that timber prices are at historically high levels and that forestry costs have stabilized thanks to falling interest rates, lower inflation and cheaper fuel.

Arvidsson says that the uncertainty ahead of 2025 is also great.

The construction of residential and commercial properties, both nationally and globally, has decreased sharply. This has led to a decrease in the need for wood products and a decrease in the price level for processed wood products. Since a large proportion of Swedish wood products are exported, the weak Swedish krona has contributed to the competitiveness of products from Swedish forestry and the forest industry having an outlet for its products.

At the same time, timber prices in Sweden have skyrocketed, which has reduced profitability for the wood industry.

Jonas Arvidsson believes that the more stable household finances, as a result of interest rate cuts, could possibly increase consumption. Together with the pent-up need for housing, this could point to a brighter future for the wood industry.

Light mode for pulp and paper

The Swedish pulp and paper industry has also been able to benefit from the weak Swedish krona, as their products are mainly traded in euros or dollars against competing companies in other countries.

Jonas Arvidsson writes that the Swedish mills have been able to sell their products, maintain production and have had good profitability. Demand for pulpwood has been stable and pulpwood prices have risen.

The marketing manager predicts that good times will continue for the pulp and paper industry. The economy is strengthening, consumption is increasing and demand and willingness to pay are likely to remain stable, he believes.

Uncertainty ahead of the year

The level of logging in Sweden is decreasing for the second year in a row, despite high timber prices and high demand for raw materials. Jonas Arvidsson believes that some explanations are increased requirements from authorities, stricter interpretation of certifications and an increased focus on zero-logging.

"This is worrying and with a decreasing supply of raw materials, either increased imports of timber and pulpwood to Sweden are required or pulp and paper mills and sawmills need to be closed down. Which is very negative for us as forest owners in the long term," he writes.

What does he think about 2025?

Many factors influence: the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, new regulations, restrictions on ownership and use, risk of trade barriers and tariffs.

However, Jonas Arvidsson generally believes that good demand for forest products will remain and play an important part in creating a sustainable future.

A decreasing supply of forest raw materials leads to increased imports or pulp and paper mills or sawmills being forced to close.
