Despite this, demand for sawn timber remains sluggish, with significant challenges persisting in the industrial and energy wood sectors. However, exports to the United States are performing well, providing some relief to the sector. The outlook for Germany’s construction industry remains weak, dampening expectations for a substantial rise in lumber prices in the near term.

Roundwood prices on the rise amid market tension

Roundwood prices saw a notable increase in October and November 2024, with further regional gains for spruce sawlogs in early 2025. Pine sawlogs, too, are seeing stronger demand compared to previous years. Nevertheless, overall market conditions remain tense.

The German sawmill industry continues to struggle with domestic sales of sawn timber in large volumes. Given the sluggish construction sector and weak economic projections for 2025, a revival in demand for construction timber remains unlikely.

By contrast, exports—especially to the United States—are performing well, according to timber owner associations. Suppliers are achieving strong prices in the US market, further bolstered by the American government’s recent tariff policies. As of February 1, a 25 percent tariff on Canadian softwood lumber came into effect, a move that may lead US buyers to seek alternative sources, potentially from Europe.

Some analysts suggest that policy initiatives aimed at stimulating US housing construction, including cost-cutting measures, may encourage domestic lumber sourcing and dampen demand for imports. With Canada remaining the dominant supplier of lumber to the US, the tariffs are expected to shift supply dynamics, potentially benefiting European exporters.

Industrial and energy wood markets remain weak

Despite overall economic uncertainty and sluggish sawn timber sales, strong demand for softwood sawlogs is expected to continue into the first quarter of 2025, with regional price increases recorded.

-Spruce, fixed-length prices for quality B/C in strength class 2b+ range between €95 and €110 per cubic meter plus VAT.

-Beetle-affected wood trades at a €20 discount.

-Following spruce trends, pine prices have also increased regionally.

In the hardwood sawlog segment, oak and ash remain the most sought-after species. The industrial roundwood market is largely balanced, with stable but regionally pressured prices. Paper, pulp, and board industries continue to absorb supply, though fluctuations are expected.

Prices for spruce sawn timber in Germany have edged up slightly in early 2025, yet the market remains under strain.
