The acquisition positions Rettenmeier as the third-largest sawmill group in Europe, with an annual softwood lumber production volume of 3.1 million cubic meters. The deal, approved by Ziegler\u2019s creditors, remains subject to antitrust clearance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A strategic expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The purchase agreement, signed on January 31, includes key Ziegler operations in Germany:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>Ziegler Holzindustrie GmbH &amp; Co. KG, Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ziegler Naturenergie GmbH, Pressath<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ziegler Forst Service GmbH<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Prechtl GmbH<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ruhland Druckluft GmbH<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The train station in Wiesau<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With this acquisition, Rettenmeier, a subsidiary of the Cordes Group, continues its rapid growth trajectory in the European timber market. The move increases its total sawmilling capacity to 6.2 million cubic meters per year and boosts its pellet production capacity to 420,000 tons annually.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg sawmill: A changing landscape<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg, home to Europe's largest sawmill, has been a key production site for Ziegler since 1948, with a peak cutting capacity of 2.2 million cubic meters per year. However, Rettenmeier CEO Stephan Lang has indicated that operations at the site will be scaled down. \u201cWe will no longer operate the sawmill on this scale,\u201d Lang stated, adding that significant restructuring efforts will be needed to restore profitability.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Further acquisitions on the horizon?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rettenmeier is also eyeing additional acquisitions from Ziegler\u2019s remaining assets. The company has expressed interest in the Ziegler Group\u2019s three other sawmills, including two in Sweden and the former HS Timber sawmill in Sebe\u0219, Romania. Combined, these sites have a production capacity of 990,000 cubic meters per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insolvency administrator knows us now,\u201d Lang commented. \u201cWe believe that our successful negotiations have positioned us well to acquire more sawmills.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A rapid rise, a sudden fall<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ziegler\u2019s collapse underscores the volatility in the European wood industry. The group, which employed around 3,000 people across Germany, Sweden, and Romania, had aggressively expanded in recent years through acquisitions, diversifying into logistics, pellet production, forestry, and modular construction. However, a sharp downturn in construction demand\u2014exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and rising interest rates\u2014left the company unable to sustain its growth trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Since November 2024, 27 of Ziegler\u2019s 45 subsidiaries have filed for insolvency.
