<\/span>The European woodworking industry welcomes the European Commission\u2019s commitment to fostering economic growth and competitiveness as outlined in the newly launched Competitiveness Compass. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening the EU\u2019s global economic position, promoting sustainable practices, and unlocking the potential of the bioeconomy.<\/p>\n

Recognising the urgent need to reduce administrative burdens, CEI-Bois calls for swift and effective measures to simplify regulations across the EU. Cutting red tape is essential to improving operational efficiency, particularly for the woodworking sector, which consists mainly of SMEs. Streamlined regulations will enable businesses to scale up innovations, contributing to the EU\u2019s climate and sustainable housing objectives.<\/p>\n

Employing nearly 1 million people across 160,000 companies, the woodworking industry plays a vital role in maintaining employment within Europe and reinforcing the European manufacturing ecosystem. However, labour shortages present a growing challenge, exacerbated by a lack of skilled workers and a mismatch between industry needs and vocational and educational training (VET) programmes.<\/p>\n

In line with the Competitiveness Compass, CEI-Bois calls for stronger support for companies investing in skills development and workforce upskilling. A highly trained and adaptable workforce is crucial for ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the European woodworking industry in an evolving market environment.<\/p>\n

Calls for Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  1. Simplify Regulations<\/strong> \u2013 Reduce administrative complexities to drive growth, innovation, and remove barriers within the Single Market.<\/li>\n
  2. Prioritise Wood in the Bioeconomy<\/strong> \u2013 Advocate for increased use of sustainable wood in construction, packaging, and everyday products.<\/li>\n
  3. Develop the Workforce<\/strong> \u2013 Support lifelong learning initiatives and establish clear career pathways to ensure a skilled and resilient workforce.<\/li>\n
  4. Ensure Raw Material Supply<\/strong> \u2013 Strengthen sustainable wood sourcing and enhance material recovery, reuse, and recycling through improved standards, urban waste sorting, and partnerships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cWoodworking is not just an industry \u2014 it is a key driver of Europe\u2019s green transformation,\u201d said Sampsa Auvinen, CEI-Bois President. \u201cTo harness its full potential, we need policies that support innovation, investment, and a stable, sustainable supply of wood resources.\u201d<\/p>\n
