In response to these developments, representatives of the sector, united under the Coalition for Polish Wood, have issued seven demands, which they see as crucial for ensuring the industry's future growth and competitiveness.

On January 23, a conference titled "What’s next for Poland’s wood industry and forests? An overview of the Polish wood industry" was held at the PAP Press Centre. Organized by the Coalition for Polish Wood, the event featured speeches by prominent industry figures, including Jerzy Majewski (MM Kwidzyn supervisory board member), Jędrzej Kasprzak (president of the Association of Wood-Based Panel Producers in Poland), Jarosław Michniuk (CEO of Paged Sklejka), and Tomasz Wiktorski (B+R Studio Market Analysis).

The conference aimed to highlight the potential of Poland’s wood industry, its significance to the national economy, and the findings of the report "What about the forests?". It also addressed the risks posed by the Ministry of Climate and Environment’s current policies. The event concluded with the presentation of the Coalition for Polish Wood's seven demands.

“Forests are a shared resource and require rational protection, not populist decisions,” emphasized Coalition representatives.

The state of Poland’s wood industry

Jarosław Michniuk opened the conference by stressing the vital role of the wood industry in Poland's economy, backed by compelling figures:

“Poland holds a top position in Europe’s wood industry. Combining all segments—wood, furniture, and paper production—we are the second-largest market in Europe, just behind Germany,” said Michniuk.

In 2023, the value of furniture production in Poland reached PLN 65.1 billion, while paper production achieved a comparable figure. Over the past 15 years, the sector has experienced consistent growth, making Poland a leader in wood product manufacturing and exports in Europe.

Windows: 3rd largest producer and the EU’s top exporter.

Flooring: No. 1 in the EU for both production and export.

Furniture: 3rd largest producer and the EU’s top exporter.

Other segments: Strong performance in garden products, wood-based panels, and pallets.

In 2023, the total output of the wood and forestry sectors amounted to PLN 210.8 billion, representing 6.8% of Poland’s GDP. The industry comprises over 74,000 enterprises employing nearly 440,000 people.

“The development of the wood industry is a tangible success. Our task now is to safeguard this progress, which we’ve painstakingly built over the years,” Michniuk added.

The state of Poland’s forests

Tomasz Wiktorski presented findings from the report "What about the forests?", noting that forests in Poland currently cover 9.48 million hectares—a 155,300-hectare increase since 2010. This expansion has been accompanied by growing timber resources.

“Poland’s forests are healthy and abundant in wood resources—the fourth largest in the EU,” Wiktorski stated.

The report highlights that Poland has effectively implemented sustainable forest management for decades, balancing conservation with the use of timber as a renewable resource.

“Deforestation is a global issue, but it does not apply to Poland. Here, forest cover is increasing. However, the pace of afforestation has slowed recently, largely due to difficulties in acquiring new land for forests,” Wiktorski said.

Surveys conducted in November 2024 by B+R Studio and PBS Sp. z o.o. revealed strong public support for sustainable forest management:

91% of Poles view forest conservation as critical.

83.4% believe responsible forest management positively impacts forest health.

80% support a model that balances ecological, social, and industrial needs.

“53% of respondents advocate for increased production of wood products, recognizing their ecological and renewable nature,” Wiktorski noted.

Wood: the material of the future

Speakers also referenced insights from the international conference "Wood as the material of the future" held in October 2024 in Sękocin Stary. Experts from across Europe emphasized wood’s critical role in low-carbon construction.

“Unfortunately, negative narratives about the forest and wood sectors are growing in Poland,” said Jerzy Majewski.

Majewski called for increased promotion of wood use in construction, aligning with the EU’s push for low-carbon materials. The EU’s Forest Strategy 2030 and Directive 2024/0440 mandate the use of zero-emission materials in new public buildings by 2028 and in all new buildings by 2030.

“Wood-based construction is best positioned to meet these requirements, and demand for timber across Europe, including Poland, is set to rise. We must continue sustainable forest management to ensure healthy forests that supply quality timber while preserving their social role,” Majewski added.

Controversial policies by the ministry of climate and environment

Over the past year, the Ministry of Climate and Environment has proposed policies that contradict EU forestry strategies, ecology, and industrial needs. Plans to halt sustainable forestry in 20% of Polish forests could have devastating effects. Currently, 8% of forests are permanently excluded from use, and further restrictions risk irreversible damage.

“We are here today because political decisions threaten the livelihood of thousands and an industry that leads in Europe,” said Jędrzej Kasprzak.

Critics argue that these decisions are short-sighted and lack strategic planning. Limiting sustainable forestry could weaken forest ecosystems, increase emissions (due to higher timber imports), and disrupt the sector's economic and social contributions.

In 2022, each cubic meter of harvested timber contributed PLN 5,600 in revenue and PLN 1,750 in added value to the wood sector. Reducing timber supply by 2 million m³ in 2025 could result in billions of zlotys in lost revenue, threatening jobs and Poland’s competitive edge.

“Forests are crucial in combating climate change, and limiting sustainable forestry could backfire. It’s vital to maintain rational forest management that ensures long-term forest health and meets industry needs,” concluded Kasprzak.

The Coalition for Polish Wood’s seven demands stress the urgent need for constructive dialogue between policymakers, the public, and the wood industry to secure a sustainable future for Poland’s forests and economy.

The current policies of the Ministry of Climate and Environment pose a number of risks to Poland’s wood industry.
