<\/span>The mood in the German wood industry continued to deteriorate in December 2024. The Main Association of the\u00a0German<\/em>\u00a0Wood Industry (HDH<\/em>) economic indicator fell for the second time in a row. While companies rated the current business situation somewhat better than in the previous month, medium-term expectations for the next six months were significantly more pessimistic.<\/p>\n

Given the different levels of impact on the individual segments, the mood in the wood industry remains mixed. Companies in prefabricated wood construction assess the business climate as cautiously negative, while the mood in the wood packaging industry, the furniture industry and the construction of the wood industry is significantly worse. From the HDH's point of view, this is mainly due to the weak overall economic development and the continued decline in demand for construction, which is characterized by high construction costs, poor financing conditions and inadequate funding for new construction. The number of building permits for single- and two-family house construction collapsed by 22.2% in the first ten months of 2024, while it fell by 21.8% in multi-family house construction. In view of the failure of the traffic light coalition and the announced new elections in February 2025, the HDH does not expect any noticeable impetus from politics in the next six months. On the contrary: There is a risk that the existing funding pots will repeatedly run dry, followed by a halt to the projects currently being planned.<\/p>\n

At least consumer sentiment recovered slightly in December after the severe setback in the previous month. Economic expectations stabilized after four consecutive declines and compensated for the losses of the previous month. However, from the consumer's point of view, a sustainable economic recovery is not yet foreseeable. Economic experts also share this assessment: the growth prospects for 2025 have been revised significantly downwards in the latest forecasts.
