From January to November 2024, China\u2019s imports of EU-origin softwood lumber plummeted by 43%, reaching just 4.86 million cubic meters.<\/span> The knock-on effects have been significant: total EU softwood lumber exports to China dropped by 35% year-on-year to 6.47 million cubic meters, while trade value fell 28% to $1.37 billion. Softwood has accounted historically account for over 70% of EU timber exports to China.<\/p>\n

European shortages meets Chinese construction crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two key factors explain the downturn. First, Europe is facing a severe softwood shortage. Germany has seen its substantial processing capacity hampered by a lack of softwood, leaving mills scrambling for raw materials. Similar pressures are evident in Norway and the Czech Republic. In Norway, logistical bottlenecks and rigid harvesting practices have hindered bioenergy production. In the Czech Republic, a shortage of conifer logs is exacerbating difficulties for sawmills and bioenergy producers.<\/p>\n

Second, China\u2019s ailing construction sector has worsened the situation. Falling housing starts and muted real estate demand have reduced the country\u2019s appetite for imported softwood, leaving European exporters facing a dual setback.<\/p>\n

These challenges have rippled out to Sweden and Finland, the world\u2019s third and fourth-largest softwood exporters. Both countries have been forced to cut production as China\u2019s slow economic recovery dampens demand. Analysts indicate that Nordic forestry firms have tempered their fourth-quarter forecasts, reflecting continued weakness in orders from China.<\/p>\n

Hardwood gains ground<\/strong><\/p>\n

In contrast, imports of EU-origin hardwood have fared better. China imported 1.62 million cubic meters of hardwood in 2024, an 18% increase from the previous year.
