Economic recovery in Europe, including demand for materials, is expected to gradually take hold. The fallen Euribor is expected to support construction and development activities, and with continued inflation, a slight increase in wood prices in Estonia is likely to occur from the second quarter<\/span>, predicts Toomas P\u00e4rtel, the head of Puumarket,\u00a0\u00a0a timber and building material business selling goods wholesale and retail in Estonia and Scandinavia.<\/p>\n

Currently, the price of construction wood is nearly 50% lower than in 2022, and the prices of general construction materials have remained stable over the past year. \u201cPrice competition among sellers has increased, which is favorable for buyers. It's also easier to find labor \u2013 many builders have returned from Finland, and it\u2019s significantly cheaper to find skilled workers than in recent years,\u201d P\u00e4rtel described the construction market situation.<\/p>\n

According to P\u00e4rtel, the price of construction wood will not rise significantly in the first quarter but will likely increase in the second quarter due to a raw material shortage. \u201cWood prices have remained stable over the past year, fluctuating within a 10% range. Demand for construction wood is high \u2013 in volume, purchases were 10% higher last year compared to the year before. Wood is a relatively affordable construction material, and its increased usage is also supported by green trends,\u201d P\u00e4rtel stated.<\/p>\n

The prices in the second quarter will be influenced significantly by auctions of wood by RMK and neighboring countries, and according to P\u00e4rtel, volumes are expected to decrease. \u201cRMK auctioned a limited amount of wood at the end of the year, and most of the bidders were left empty-handed, so a shortage of raw materials will begin to limit sawmills, which will likely drive up prices,\u201d P\u00e4rtel explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cLog material will no longer come from Russia, and similar raw material issues are emerging in Finland, where large sawmills are facing shortages \u2013 primarily of spruce, and production volumes are already being scaled back. The demand for pine is generally a bit lower, and there is enough of it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Forest owners enjoyed the increase in timber prices. What will the new year bring?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Heiki Hepner, who has analyzed the Estonian timber market for years, predicts that, just like last year, the price trend for roundwood this year will be favorable for forest owners.<\/p>\n

According to Hepner, the last few years have been very good from the perspective of a timber seller or forest owner, the price has remained high for several years and it is very likely that this price level will remain so next year. However, for timber industries, the high price level is a cause for concern.<\/p>\n

\"The last two or three years have not been easy for entrepreneurs. The main concern is that there is no investment in new developments, and this could at some point have a very painful effect on Estonia,\" Hepner predicts on the show.<\/p>\n

Jaano Haidla: The wood industry is currently in trouble, but there is hope for salvation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently re-elected as the chairman of the board of the Estonian Forest and Wood Industry Association, Graanul Invest board member Jaano Haidla spoke recently about the state of the Estonian timber sector.
