At the heart of this monumental effort was French oak timber, selected and shaped with care to replicate the materials and methods used in the 13th and 19th centuries.

The project relied on over 2,000 oak trees harvested from sustainably managed forests across France. These trees, some more than 200 years old, formed the framework for the cathedral’s roof and spire, known as “the forest.” The achievement represents not only a testament to the skill of French craftspeople but also the enduring value of the nation’s forestry traditions.

Timber rooted in history

Oak hardwood timber is at the heart of the Notre Dame Cathedral. The Latrobe Valley’s hardwood industry has stood still for the last year.

The medieval frames of Notre-Dame’s nave and choir, dating to the 13th century, and the spire designed by 19th-century architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc were completely destroyed in the 2019 blaze. The restoration project set out to replicate these structures identically, requiring materials and craftsmanship that matched the original techniques.

Tree selection for the project began in early 2021, with chief architects and forestry experts working together to identify trees that met the exacting specifications. Oaks between 80 and 150 years old, and in some cases older, were chosen for their size, strength, and suitability for beams measuring up to 20 meters in length. Care was taken to ensure the ecological balance of the forests, with only mature trees being felled after naturally seeding their surroundings.

The final trees were harvested in February 2023, marking the end of a process that spanned multiple regions of France. Transported to sawmills, the logs were processed into structural components between September 2021 and June 2022, producing beams and trusses that would eventually shape the cathedral’s roof.

Traditional craftsmanship revived

The reconstruction of Notre-Dame demanded the revival of ancient carpentry techniques. Beams were hand-hewn using traditional squaring methods, a labor-intensive process that follows the natural direction of wood fibers. This technique not only ensured the durability of the timber but also preserved the authenticity of the original design.

The first trusses—large triangular structures essential for supporting the roof—were transported to the cathedral site along the Seine River in July 2023. Measuring 14 meters wide and 12 meters high, and weighing over seven tonnes, these components were lifted by cranes and carefully positioned above the cathedral’s vaulted ceilings.

By March 2024, the roof framework, consisting of more than 100 trusses, was fully installed. The project culminated in April 2024 with the completion of structural work, marking a major milestone in the cathedral’s restoration.

A national mobilization

The restoration of Notre-Dame united diverse sectors of France’s forestry and timber industries. State-owned forests, private landowners, forestry cooperatives, and sawmills all contributed to the project, ensuring that every stage of the process adhered to sustainable management practices.

Forests in France cover 17 million hectares, with oak representing 3.8 million hectares, or 22% of the total area. The country’s oak forests are estimated to contain 615 million cubic meters of standing timber, with annual growth exceeding harvest levels. This ensures the longevity of the resource, even as projects like Notre-Dame require significant quantities of wood.

The reconstruction relied on more than 35 sawmills and 175 certified forests, with over 80% of the timber meeting strict sustainability criteria. This level of coordination highlights the strength of France’s forestry sector, which balances environmental stewardship with economic and cultural priorities.

Crafting a legacy

The restoration of Notre-Dame is as much a cultural achievement as it is a technical one. The intricate work of hewers, squarers, and carpenters

Major works: The cathedral, which suffered significant fire damage in 2019, was reopened last month.

brought to life centuries-old techniques, ensuring that the rebuilt cathedral remains true to its historical origins.

The spire and transept arms, reconstructed in the project’s first phase, were crafted using 19th-century methods. The second phase, focusing on the medieval frameworks of the choir and nave, required advanced skills to replicate the craftsmanship of the 13th century.

Key to the project’s success was the collective effort of all stakeholders, from forest owners to master carpenters. The oak used represents just 0.2% of France’s annual harvest, underscoring the sustainable approach taken throughout the process.

Preserving heritage for generations

France’s forests, like its historic architecture, are deeply intertwined with the country’s identity. The completion of Notre-Dame’s restoration ensures that this iconic symbol will endure for centuries, supported by the same natural and human resources that shaped its original construction.

The cathedral’s rebirth is a tribute to the strength of French forestry, the expertise of its craftspeople, and a commitment to preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. From the forests to the spire, Notre-Dame stands once again as a monument to human ingenuity and a living testament to France’s enduring legacy.

The iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, severely damaged by a devastating fire in April 2019, has been restored to its former glory, reopening to the public after years of meticulous reconstruction.
