The sentence, handed down by a U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, also requires the defendant, Trent William Witteveen, 40, to repay $844,282 in restitution to his victims.<\/p>\n<p>Witteveen, a former owner of <em>Titan Timber<\/em> and <em>Titans Timber LLC<\/em>, used his companies to orchestrate a fraudulent scheme between 2018 and 2021. Promising high returns, he persuaded investors to fund logging projects based on fabricated or exaggerated timber contracts. His operation primarily targeted investors and landowners in Northwest Michigan, particularly around Pentwater.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the scheme worked<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Witteveen claimed to have secured logging rights from landowners and presented checks and documents to support his claims. However, many of these contracts were either non-existent or based on timber already harvested. He used funds from new investors to repay earlier ones, creating the illusion of a profitable venture while siphoning off money to cover personal expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office described the operation as a textbook Ponzi scheme, in which false promises and misrepresentations fueled the scam until its inevitable collapse. FBI investigators, assisted by the Michigan State Police, uncovered the fraud following complaints from suspicious investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prosecutors and defense statements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney Mark Totten highlighted the gravity of the crime, stating, \u201cWitteveen exploited the trust of his investors, causing significant financial harm to individuals who believed in his false promises. This sentencing underscores our commitment to holding financial fraudsters accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, defense attorney Ryan Maesen characterized Witteveen\u2019s actions as a desperate attempt to salvage a failing business. He emphasized that Witteveen did not lead a lavish lifestyle but instead reinvested funds to keep the business afloat. \u201cThis is a tragic situation for everyone involved,\u201d Maesen said, noting his client\u2019s remorse and the lasting impact on the victims, including personal acquaintances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The aftermath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Witteveen\u2019s fraudulent activities unraveled in 2024, leading to his guilty plea in July of that year. Victims, many of whom were community members and close associates, expressed frustration over their losses and the betrayal of trust.<\/p>\n<p>Special Agent Cheyvoryea Gibson of the FBI in Michigan noted, \u201cThis case demonstrates the damaging effects of financial fraud, not just on individuals but on the integrity of our financial systems.
