<\/span>Figures from the Norwegian Agriculture Agency show that Norway's forest owners sold 11.97 million cubic meters of timber for industrial purposes in 2024. The gross value of the timber exceeded 8 billion NOK (\u20ac688 million), marking a 33% increase from 2023.<\/p>\n

This record-breaking harvest volume surpasses the previous record year of 2022 by 336,000 cubic meters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe record-high harvest in 2024 is due to strong demand for timber, high timber prices, and favorable operating conditions during the winter,\u201d said Trond Svan\u00f8e-Hafstad, section manager at the Norwegian Agriculture Agency.<\/p>\n

The gross value of timber in 2024 reached over 8 billion NOK (\u20ac688 million), an increase of 2 billion NOK (\u20ac172 million) or 33% from 2023. Prices for both sawlogs and pulpwood rose steadily throughout the year. The average timber price increased from 602 NOK (\u20ac51.75) per cubic meter in January to 762 NOK (\u20ac65.46) in December, setting a new record high.<\/p>\n

High timber values \u2013 much exported due to volatile markets <\/strong><\/p>\n

The price increase for timber in 2024 stems from several factors. A global timber shortage has driven demand in Norway as well. Contributing factors include previous bark beetle damage in North America and Europe and the cessation of timber exports from Russia. Simultaneously, several industrial players, both in Norway and internationally, have expanded production and require higher timber volumes.<\/p>\n

The Norwegian Agriculture Agency has engaged in discussions with various players in the forestry sector in Norway. \u201cWhat we\u2019re hearing is that the price trends for timber over the past two years don\u2019t mirror the price development for finished products like lumber. This suggests that the industry is paying increasingly higher prices for timber to secure raw materials for their production, competing against other players,\u201d commented Trond Svan\u00f8e-Hafstad.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
