This year, the situation in the timber industry will largely depend on the European Central Bank's (ECB) decisions on interest rates, as well as the reaction and ability of society and companies to adapt to the new circumstances<\/span>, said Andris Ramoli\u0146\u0161, owner and chairman of the board of the timber industry and forestry company SIA \"Stiga RM\".<\/p>\n

He also emphasized that although the ECB is gradually starting to reduce its rates, which will most likely slightly improve the situation in the sector, relying on ECB decisions cannot be a strategy for the Latvian timber industry. An increase in rates may provide the sector with some growth, but if the construction sector continues to wait for a more favorable situation without qualitative improvement, the rapid market volatility will be a regular obstacle and a greater challenge for market participants.<\/p>\n

Ramoli\u0146\u0161 explains that currently, manufacturers that produce more complex products are surviving and operating more successfully. Therefore, Latvian forestry and wood industry must invest in high-value-added production.<\/p>\n

The owner of the company pointed out that in 2024 the construction season has ended and will resume only in the spring, so the winter period will not be particularly favorable for the timber industry in Latvia. However, this does not apply to all industry participants, because, for example, the situation is much more favorable for manufacturers of special wood products and narrow niche products. The demand for materials that are produced using special equipment, giving added value to wood, has remained at a stable high level for several years and their selling price is not subject to major fluctuations.<\/p>\n

Ramoli\u0146\u0161 mentioned that 2024 started off promisingly for the timber industry. At the beginning of the year, there were positive forecasts for an active upcoming construction season, so at the beginning of spring in Europe and the US, there was a marked increase in demand for various building materials, including boards and other timber, which also contributed to a slight increase in timber prices.<\/p>\n

However, the situation worsened in May, as materials delivered at the beginning of the year filled customer warehouses, but further sales did not occur as quickly as initially predicted. Also, uncertainty in the industry in the second half of the year was caused by a sharp drop in the price of fuel chips, as well as a drop in the price of pulpwood in the fall, which is very unusual for the heating season.<\/p>\n

It has already been reported that the turnover of the \"Stiga RM\" group last year was almost 95 million euros, which is 12% more than the year before, but the group's profit did not change significantly and was 22.2 million euros. In turn, the parent company \"Stiga RM\" worked with a turnover of 76.554 million euros and a profit of 19.477 million euros in 2023.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
