<\/span>Although according to October foreign trade statistics, exports of Estonian wood products increased sharply compared to the same period last year, this is likely due to a larger one-off transaction, and the wood industry expects the decline in interest rates to boost the construction sector in export markets.<\/p>\n

According to Statistics Estonia, in October this year, Estonian wood and wood products were exported by 44.1 million euros more than in the same period last year. Of this, 13.6 million was due to an increase in wood pellet exports, most of which were exported to Denmark.<\/p>\n

However, the export turnover of the Estonian wood industry will be clearly smaller this year compared to last year, and the production volume index has fallen to its lowest level in seven years, said Alvar M\u00e4llo, head of the wood industry sector at Swedbank.<\/p>\n

\"However, as a result of cost cutting, industrialists are somewhat more profitable compared to last year. The growth in wood product exports in October rather reflects the stabilization of the market, as we have reached near the bottom in terms of volumes,\" said M\u00e4llo.<\/p>\n

Entrepreneurs are rather expecting growth from the spring of next year, when the decline in interest rates could reach target markets.<\/p>\n

\"In the coming months and next year, the decline in interest rates should stimulate demand in our target markets, especially in the construction sector. However, it is important to consider that the impact of the decline in interest rates reaches consumers with a delay of about six months, which is why the recovery in demand largely depends on the speed of the recovery in final consumption,\" said M\u00e4llo.<\/p>\n

According to Henrik V\u00e4lja, CEO of the Estonian Forest and Wood Industry Association, no fundamental improvement is expected in the Estonian wood industry at the moment, but the outlook for a recovery in foreign demand can be mildly optimistic due to the expected decline in interest rates. \"However, the situation is still difficult in the main export markets of our sector,\" he noted.<\/p>\n

There is no long-term investment certainty in the sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biggest concern of timber companies is poor competitiveness and lack of confidence in the Estonian market.<\/p>\n

He stated that the interest rate cut will not solve internal problems that weaken the competitiveness of the Estonian wood sector, such as high energy prices and uncertainty about the availability of raw materials.<\/p>\n

So far, the largest employers, woodworking companies, have weathered the crisis well thanks to their strong capitalization, M\u00e4llo said. \"High inflation and interest rates have left their mark, and demand is gradually recovering.\"<\/p>\n

\"Uncertainty regarding the availability of raw materials hinders long-term investments and stable development, and a more favorable interest rate environment will not compensate for this. It is still necessary to invest to improve efficiency in order to create as much value as possible from existing raw materials, but due to weak competitiveness and raw material uncertainty, large-scale investments are not expected in the mechanical wood processing sector,\" said M\u00e4llo.<\/p>\n

According to M\u00e4llo, the field of wood chemistry has the greatest potential for developing new products. \"However, to promote this, it is necessary to make clear strategic decisions and make the development of a sector that valorizes local raw materials one of the main goals.\"<\/p>\n

He noted that the prolonged uncertainty in forestry policy and the establishment of climate goals and restrictions does not give courage to contribute to the long-term development of the wood industry in Estonia, which is why they are looking to neighboring countries.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
