The sector includes around 40,000 companies, providing nearly 350,000 direct jobs, especially in rural areas. It also holds a leading position in the European Union in terms of production and export of furniture, boards, wooden packaging, wooden floors, and paper.<\/p>\n<p>However, the sector now faces a critical challenge: a severe limitation of the main raw material, wood. In January 2024, the Ministry of Climate and Environment imposed a moratorium on timber harvesting and began excluding forest areas from sustainable management. This has already reduced the availability of wood, which is essential to the timber industry.<\/p>\n<p>Entrepreneurs argue that the National Conference on Forests, organized to support the Ministry's decision to exclude 20% of State Forests from use, ignored the opinions of scientists, naturalists, and the timber industry. Furthermore, no comprehensive analyses of the social and financial impacts of limiting timber harvesting were conducted.<\/p>\n<p>The entrepreneurs stress the need for a more balanced approach, one that considers the opinions of experts and industry representatives. They argue that changes in forest management should be gradual, not drastic, and should be made only after thorough consultations with relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry's proposed exclusion of forests from use in 2025 will further reduce wood supply by 3 million m\u00b3, leading to a revenue loss for the State Forests of nearly PLN 1 billion (EUR 215 million). For the timber industry, the losses are expected to reach PLN 12 billion (EUR 2.5 billion), with further losses in the coming years as more areas are excluded from use.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Coalition, the Polish timber industry is largely concentrated in rural areas, where it serves as the primary employer for many families. Restrictions on wood supply are already resulting in job losses, with over 200 furniture companies ceasing operations this year, impacting thousands of workers.<\/p>\n<p>The reduction in wood availability will disproportionately affect small and medium-sized enterprises, leading to a collapse of many companies, the Coalition says. This will further harm state budget revenues, which are heavily reliant on exports, particularly from the furniture sector. Preliminary estimates show a 6% drop in furniture production in 2024, alongside nearly 20% lower profits for companies in the sector. The profitability of these companies is projected to fall from 6.4% to around 5.2%, with a nearly PLN 190 million (EUR 40 million) decrease in the sector's net financial result.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Coalition, the Ministry's restrictions on timber harvesting conflict with EU regulations aimed at improving the energy performance of buildings, where wood-based construction is the only material currently able to meet the required zero-emission standards for new public buildings from 2028 and all other new buildings from 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition for Polish Wood is urging the Prime Minister to reconsider the Ministry's policy on timber harvesting to prevent the collapse of the timber industry, protect jobs, and safeguard the Polish economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Coalition for Polish Wood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Coalition for Polish Wood is an initiative of associations and companies representing the furniture, board, paper, and sawmill industries.
