According to China Customs, log and lumber imports from the European Union (EU) dropped significantly between January and September 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

China\u2019s\u00a0log imports<\/strong>\u00a0from the EU decreased by 37%, reaching 3.616 million cubic meters during this period. Among the major suppliers, log imports from Germany, Poland, France, Denmark, and the Czech Republic experienced the steepest declines. Conversely, Latvia and Slovakia recorded increases of 19% and 38%, respectively.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s\u00a0lumber imports<\/strong>\u00a0from EU member states also declined, falling by 22% to 1.788 million cubic meters between January and September 2024. Shipments from top exporters Finland, Germany, and Sweden dropped significantly, contributing to the overall decrease. However, lumber imports from Romania rose by 10% during the same period.<\/p>\n

Rising log imports from North America<\/h3>\n

The decline in EU imports was partially offset by increased log imports from North America. China\u2019s log imports from the United States and Canada rose by 4% and 24%, respectively, between January and September 2024.<\/p>\n

Factors driving the decline<\/h3>\n

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has disrupted timber exports from several EU member states, affecting supply chains. Additionally, reduced demand for timber in China and a decline in domestic timber production in the EU\u2014particularly in Germany\u2014contributed to the reduced imports.<\/p>\n

Surge in US softwood lumber imports<\/h3>\n

China Customs data also highlights a sharp increase in sawn softwood imports from the United States, which surged 43% to 162,400 cubic meters between January and September 2024. Significant volumes of pine lumber, alongside Douglas fir, hemlock, and spruce, were imported. However, China\u2019s sawn hardwood imports from the United States declined by 15% to 737,300 cubic meters, contributing to an overall 8% drop in total lumber imports from the US to 899,700 cubic meters during the same period.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
