The Norwegian timber industry faces a complex situation marked by record-high timber prices and growing concerns over increased exports.<\/span> While forest owners benefit from unprecedented earnings, domestic producers are sounding alarms over potential shortages and rising costs that could disrupt local markets.<\/p>\n

According to the Norwegian Forest Owners' Association and Statistics Norway (SSB), timber prices have surged by 26% over the past year. In the third quarter of 2024, forest owners received an average of 694 NOK per cubic meter (approximately 59 EUR), with sawlogs fetching up to 830 NOK for spruce (70 EUR) and 787 NOK for pine (66 EUR). Both sawlogs and pulpwood saw similar price increases compared to 2023, driven by global raw material shortages caused by factors such as the war in Ukraine and bark beetle infestations.<\/p>\n

Exports raise alarms among producers<\/strong><\/p>\n

The increasing export of raw timber is a key concern for Norway\u2019s wood products industry. Statistics show a 7% rise in timber exports during the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with 1.1 million cubic meters of timber exported. Exports of sawlogs alone increased by 11.6% through October, according to SSB.<\/p>\n

Heidi Finstad, CEO of the Treindustrien association, warned about the implications of this trend in a recent statement:<\/p>\n

\"The alarming increase in raw material exports continues, which risks creating a shortage of wood products in Norway and driving up prices.\"
\nFinstad emphasized that rising timber prices, coupled with dwindling local supply, could make it difficult for Norwegian companies to meet demand for construction and renovation projects. She also highlighted the challenges faced by the construction industry, which is already grappling with a slowdown in housing starts and rising insolvencies.<\/p>\n

Record prices for forest owners<\/strong><\/p>\n

For forest owners, however, the surge in timber exports has been a boon. October saw sawlog prices hit 877 NOK per cubic meter (75 EUR), up from 854 NOK in September (73 EUR), setting new records. Pulpwood also saw strong demand, with 54% of the third quarter's production being exported.<\/p>\n

H\u00e5kon Bakken, sales manager at Glommen Mj\u00f8sen Skog, noted that global shortages of timber are sustaining high demand for Norwegian wood, despite a weak domestic market for wood products.<\/p>\n

\"While some product areas are struggling, overall demand for pulpwood remains robust. The raw material needs of the industry will continue to support high prices in the near term,\" Bakken said.<\/p>\n

A precarious balance<\/strong><\/p>\n

While strong exports provide financial relief to forest owners and some segments of the industry, the imbalance in supply and demand poses risks. Producers warn that the lack of local raw materials could undermine Norway's ability to sustain its wood products industry. Finstad stressed the importance of maintaining production capacity and securing labor in Norway to prepare for future demand when the housing market rebounds.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
