As the director of public affairs at CEI-Bois (the European Confederation of the Woodworking Industry) and EOS (the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry), Paul Brannen frequently discusses the environmental\u2014and thus climate\u2014benefits of building and renovating more with wood. This inspired him to write a book on the subject, exploring how wood can help save the planet from climate change. <\/span><\/p>\n

Why this book?<\/h3>\n

Paul Brannen:<\/strong> \u201cFrom the outset, my goal was to write a readable and accessible book for the general public. I was determined that it wouldn\u2019t be a technical manual but rather a document intended for a wide audience, including university students in fields like forestry, agriculture, architecture, engineering, and climate change. It\u2019s also aimed at politicians and decision-makers who are working on climate issues but have little or no knowledge of the key topics addressed in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why isn\u2019t wood used more in construction?<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe construction industry is inherently conservative. We\u2019ve been building the same way for over 100 years. Every link in the chain knows its role, and more importantly, it\u2019s a profitable process. So, why change?<\/p>\n

That said, the market share of wood in construction and renovation is increasing\u2014but far too slowly for wood to reach its full potential in decarbonizing the built environment over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n

On one hand, most clients don\u2019t request wooden structures. On the other, most construction companies don\u2019t offer them. Everyone involved in construction\u2014along with policymakers and environmentalists\u2014needs to better understand that significantly increasing the use of wood in buildings could account for at least 15% of the solution to climate change. Without much greater use of wood in the built environment, we won\u2019t be able to halt climate degradation. That\u2019s why I wrote this book: to deliver this message clearly, engagingly, and compellingly.\u201d<\/p>\n

What are the obstacles?<\/h3>\n

\u201cFirst, there\u2019s a lack of understanding about wood\u2019s potential to decarbonize the built environment. Second, in most European countries, governments haven\u2019t yet made it clear that we need to stop building carbon-intensive structures. Legislation will eventually mandate low-carbon homes and buildings, meaning low emissions during both construction and the building\u2019s lifecycle. Until this is firmly established, construction will remain one of the largest carbon emitters.<\/p>\n

Politicians hesitate to change the rules partly due to a lack of knowledge and partly because they worry about two main issues: is there enough sustainable wood for increased use, and what about deforestation and biodiversity loss? These concerns often stem from environmentalist lobbying.<\/p>\n

My book addresses these obstacles, emphasizing that deforestation isn\u2019t a problem in Europe. In fact, European forests have grown in recent years. Forest cover has increased, particularly in Eastern Europe, and we\u2019ve also planted more trees on farms across the continent. Producing wood and enhancing biodiversity are not mutually exclusive. With the right knowledge and tools, we can achieve both.<\/p>\n

As for sustainable wood availability, it\u2019s not an issue if certain actions are taken across Europe: harvesting closer to net annual growth, encouraging tree planting, achieving 10% tree cover on farmland, improving material efficiency, increasing recycling and reuse, adding wooden extensions to buildings, reducing demolitions, and optimizing log processing.\u201d<\/p>\n

What steps would you prioritize to promote wood use in construction?<\/h3>\n

\u201cWe have a great story to tell, but like all communications, success comes from repeating the message again and again in new and engaging ways. Central to this message are wood\u2019s climate benefits: replacing higher-carbon materials (emission reduction) and storing carbon (emission storage in the material).<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the parallel story of wood\u2019s health and well-being benefits for people living and working in wooden buildings. While the scientific evidence for this isn\u2019t as extensive as for climate benefits, it\u2019s growing, and we need to use this argument more.<\/p>\n

We should highlight opportunities to build wooden extensions on existing buildings, particularly in city centers where housing demand and land prices are high. Wood\u2019s relative lightness compared to concrete and steel makes it ideal for such projects.<\/p>\n

Additionally, we should support the construction of more hybrid buildings, especially high-rise structures. Foundations and the lower third of a 20-story building can be made from concrete and steel, while the upper two-thirds can be constructed with engineered wood. This is a far better climate option than using 100% concrete and steel. It\u2019s also more appealing to the conservative construction industry because it doesn\u2019t require abandoning familiar materials, just adding a new one. Experience shows that after two years of working with wood, most construction professionals become converts. So let\u2019s use hybrid construction as a springboard to broader wood adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you have a message for the forest-wood industry?<\/h3>\n

\u201cYou need to go above and beyond! We\u2019ve never had so many opportunities to expand wood use in the built environment. But this won\u2019t happen without hard work and quality advocacy. Remember, producers of materials we aim to replace with wood haven\u2019t stopped lobbying, advertising, and engaging with the media\u2014in fact, they\u2019re fighting harder and often more aggressively.<\/p>\n

We need to step up quickly. If we achieve the breakthrough we\u2019re aiming for, we\u2019ll need enough wood-based products to meet significantly higher demand. For example, wood fiber insulation accounts for less than 5% of the EU market today. We should aim for at least 50%. Are we ready for such an increase? Not yet, but we must prepare.<\/p>\n

And if the forest-wood sector doesn\u2019t have a plan to scale up, why should politicians take an interest?<\/p>\n

Finally, you may not have joined this industry intending to become a climate champion, but destiny has handed you that role. You\u2019re part of a global team that can deliver at least 15% of the solution to climate change.
