San Group, which operates two sawmills and a remanufacturing plant in Port Alberni, is facing financial difficulties and has implemented layoffs due to a shortage of logs.<\/span><\/p>\n

San Group has filed for creditor protection after accumulating claims from creditors amounting to over $100 million. The company, which relies on the open market for its log supply, has recently imposed curtailments and layoffs at its sawmills and value-added plant in Port Alberni due to a shortage of logs. The layoffs are estimated to affect between 100 and 200 employees.<\/p>\n

Port Alberni\u2019s mayor, Sherie Minions, expressed concern for the workers and local businesses owed money, noting that the Forests Ministry has activated the community transition team to support affected workers. While the company\u2019s challenges have been significant, including the expiration of U.S. customs import bonds and rising pressure from creditors, the Ministry of Forests has stated it is in contact with San Group and offering support where possible.<\/p>\n

The San Group has faced various difficulties in recent years, including disruptions from wildfires, a port strike, and a major fire at its Acorn Mill in Delta. These events, combined with broader industry challenges such as rising lumber prices and inflation, have placed significant financial strain on the company.<\/p>\n

In an effort to restructure, San Group is working with Deloitte Restructuring Inc., which has been appointed as a monitor by the B.C. Supreme Court. The company is seeking court approval for a sale and investment-solicitation process to address its financial situation. San Group\u2019s petition for creditor protection under the Companies\u2019 Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) aims to provide the firm with temporary relief from creditors while it works on a restructuring plan.<\/p>\n

Despite these efforts, San Group has faced difficulties in securing new backing and has had to deal with substantial tax and financial liabilities, including an ongoing dispute over $22 million in stumpage fees owed to the province.
