Some species, such as radiata pine logs, have seen continuous price declines. The price of 3.9m, Medium A-grade logs has dropped from around €110 per cubic meter to €105-110, while 5.9m, Medium A-grade logs have decreased from €120 to €115-120 per cubic meter.

Industry experts suggest that the low prices for pine are largely due to weak demand from downstream markets. The persistent downturn in the real estate market and reduced infrastructure projects are the main factors contributing to this weakness. “Demand for pine from the real estate and infrastructure sectors accounts for more than 80% of the entire pine market. With both of these key drivers now stagnating, the pine market can’t perform well either.”

Additionally, a large influx of pine imports in October has further increased domestic pine inventories. In the context of worsening supply and demand imbalances, this has led to a lack of price support, resulting in a price correction.

It is also worth noting that while domestic pine prices remain low, the cost of importing pine is steadily rising. Some traders have reported that the recent depreciation of the RMB against the USD, with the exchange rate dropping to 1:7.2, has increased the import cost of pine by several euros per cubic meter. This has directly led to higher operational costs for businesses, shrinking profits and further increasing pressure on traders.

Despite being in the traditional peak season, the timber market in China is still showing no significant improvement.
