Stora Enso plans to sell twelve percent of its forest holdings, which corresponds to 168,000 hectares. <\/span>It is the largest forest transaction in five years, and if it is a success, it could lead to more large-scale sales of forest in Sweden, believes Danske Bank's forest expert.<\/p>\n

The reason for the sale is that Stora Enso wants to reduce indebtedness and strengthen the group's balance sheet, as well as to obtain a reference price for the forest holdings. It is not yet known which part of the forest holding it is about.<\/p>\n

The transaction includes a long-term agreement on wood supply and forest management, which means that Stora Enso continues to be the recipient of the raw material flow from sold forest land.<\/p>\n

Erik Backman, Forestry and Agriculture Specialist at Danske Bank \u00d6sterg\u00f6tland, writes in the bank's latest market analysis that after a standard calculation based on Stora Enso's valuation of its forest, the forest land to be sold should be worth SEK 8.8 billion, with the reservation that we cannot with certainty know whether the twelve percent is about productive forest or total area.<\/p>\n

Possible foreign buyer<\/strong><\/p>\n

He does not think that it is likely that another large Swedish forest group will become a buyer. Both SCA and Holmen have previously confirmed that image in the media. Erik Backman's guess is instead a pension fund or an insurance company. Maybe it will be a foreign buyer? The German insurance company Munich Res bought 33,000 hectares of forest land in Finland this spring, writes Backman as an example.<\/p>\n

In any case, he believes that the sale will have consequences for both Stora Enso and other Swedish forest companies: \"The more successful the sale becomes in terms of price and impact on Stora Enso's share price, the more attractive it will be for Stora Enso to continue with more sales.
