Sawlog prices are steadily increasing and are expected to remain high throughout the winter, with potential for further growth.

Regional price variations are pronounced, as transportation costs heavily influence timber pricing. Areas close to industrial facilities, timber ports, and rail terminals see higher prices, while regions with limited access face lower offers.

Currently, spruce sawlogs are fetching between NOK 900–950/m³ (€78–82/m³) in many areas, while pine sawlogs, slightly lower in price, still exceed NOK 800/m³ (€69/m³) near industrial hubs. For pulpwood, the average price in October was over NOK 700/m³ (€61/m³), reflecting strong demand. Further price increases for sawlogs are anticipated, supporting higher returns during the winter harvesting season.

A shifting timber market landscape

Norway's forests are increasingly viewed as a vital resource by the European industry. After years of underharvesting relative to growth, Norway is now seen as an attractive supplier of raw materials. Across Europe, sawmills have expanded production capacity significantly following strong profitability between 2018 and 2022. However, the availability of sawlogs has not kept pace, with harvesting volumes even decreasing in Sweden due to forest conservation policies and other measures to protect biodiversity.

This has created a significant imbalance in the sawlog market, with demand far outstripping supply. Despite rising sawlog prices, most sawmills in Europe are struggling with negative profit margins, and closures are expected in the coming year due to the fierce competition and raw material shortages.

Export market overview

The Norwegian timber export market remains highly competitive as countries like Germany and the Baltic states increase their efforts to secure volumes. This competition is driven by raw material shortages, particularly for spruce, rather than an increase in finished lumber demand.

Globally, lumber production in Europe and North America has dropped to its lowest level in nine years due to weak construction activity, slow economic growth, and high costs. Despite this, cautious optimism exists for a modest recovery in 2025, particularly in the U.S.

For Norwegian timber, the export market is marked by challenges such as volatile prices in the Baltics, which recently fell sharply, giving Swedish buyers access to cheaper alternatives. However, Norwegian timber prices remain strong and are unlikely to decrease in the near term as long as supply-demand imbalances persist.

The demand for softwood sawlogs and pulpwood in Norway remains robust as winter approaches, driven by intense competition despite low construction activity and subdued lumber prices in end markets.
