Known for its timber-based construction and other wood processing ventures, Ziegler employs 3,200 staff across Germany, Sweden, and Romania. Despite generating over €1 billion in revenue in 2022, the company now faces an uncertain future for its 34 locations in Germany.

Additional entities follow the holding company into insolvency

Initially, only the holding company was impacted, but within a week, insolvency proceedings extended to other group subsidiaries. According to insolvency administrator Volker Böhm, Ziegler Holzindustrie GmbH and Naturheld GmbH have also filed for insolvency in Weiden. Applications for Ziegler Naturenergie GmbH, the group’s pellet manufacturing arm, and Holzzentrum Ziegler GmbH are expected later this week.

The Ziegler Group has five more subsidiaries in wood processing, with three based abroad: Balungstrands Sågverk AB and Bäckebrons Sågverk AB in Sweden, and ZG Timber Sebes in Romania. Domestically, the Ziegler Forstservice GmbH and Ziegler Holztechnik GmbH have yet to be included in the filings. The company stated that it will decide by the end of the week whether additional insolvency applications will be necessary.

Two Swedish sawmills

Since May 2022, Ziegler Group owns two sawmills in Sweden, Balungstrand's Sawmill and Bäckebron's Sawmill. When Ziegler Group acquired the two Swedish sawmill units, it was the group's first expansion outside of Germany.

Bäckebron's Sawmill CEO Stefan Gillberg confirms on the company's website that the owner company has gone bankrupt, but that Bäckebron's and Balungstrand's sawmills continue to operate just as before:

"Bäckebron's and Balungstrand's sawmills currently have no loans on their balance sheet and are very solid, so the operations will continue to be run just as before on their own liquidity and are not dependent on our owners. We don't know anything about what will happen in the future, but the companies will probably be sold to a new owner in the future. With these short lines, I just want to ask all of you that we can continue to work together just like before, so we don't compromise these well-functioning businesses," Gillberg said.

The construction industry crisis, aggressive purchases as causes for insolvency

The Ziegler Group, with an annual turnover of around one billion euros and over 3,000 employees in Germany, Sweden and Romania, is one of the largest suppliers to the construction industry. Its core business is wood production and processing for the construction industry. In recent years, Ziegler has embarked on an aggressive growth course through acquisitions, according to insolvency administrator Böhm. The group now includes over 30 companies that are active in logistics, pellet production, forestry, window construction and building services, among other areas. Ziegler wanted to become one of the largest eco-prefabricated house producers in the country, with sales of up to 3,000 houses per year. The collapse of the construction industry as a result of the war in Ukraine hit the Ziegler Group hard "in the middle of its growth phase," said Böhm.

On November 20, Ziegler Holding GmbH, a company with 75 years of history, filed for insolvency at the Weiden District Court.
