<\/span>The Ziegler Holding has filed for insolvency, putting the large sawmill in Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg at risk, along with 3,200 jobs.<\/p>\n

This news has shocked the German sawmill industry. Ziegler Holding GmbH, which operates Europe's largest sawmill in Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg through its Ziegler Group, has been forced to declare insolvency.<\/p>\n

With approximately 3,200 employees, Ziegler is one of the most significant employers in the Upper Palatinate. The company primarily focuses on wood processing but has expanded into various business areas in recent years, including ventures abroad with significant operations in Sweden and Romania. Ziegler had also entered the modular construction sector. Rumors of financial difficulties had circulated for some time, but the scale of the current situation far exceeded expectations.<\/p>\n

Only Ziegler Holding affected so far<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, only Ziegler Holding, employing 170 people, is impacted by the insolvency filing. The holding company includes over 30 other operational entities, none of which have yet filed for insolvency. However, the insolvency administrator is reviewing whether additional filings might be necessary.<\/p>\n

For now, operations are set to continue, with employees\u2019 salaries covered by insolvency compensation funds for the next three months.<\/p>\n

Concerns for the sawmill<\/strong><\/p>\n

Particular concern surrounds the company's centerpiece, Europe\u2019s largest sawmill in Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg, employing approximately 700 people. The potential loss of jobs in this economically fragile region would be a severe blow.<\/p>\n

Over the past few years, Ziegler invested around \u20ac800 million in regional companies and sawmills in Sweden and Romania. While media reports indicate that Ziegler\u2019s revenue surpassed \u20ac1 billion in 2022, significant losses from some investments left little in the company\u2019s coffers.<\/p>\n

Economic downturn hits hard<\/strong><\/p>\n

The company faced challenges at a time when improvements were desperately needed. Economic headwinds included a declining construction industry, sharply rising production costs, and collapsing demand, which severely eroded the holding company\u2019s financial stability. Failed investor negotiations further worsened the situation, leading to the insolvency filing on Wednesday at the Weiden district court.<\/p>\n

Now, around 3,000 employees across Ziegler\u2019s 30+ companies fear for their jobs. Whether the company can be restructured or parts of it saved through sales will become clearer in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Tirschenreuth District Administrator Roland Grillmeier expressed his concern, stating, \u201cToday is not a good day for the Tirschenreuth district and the northern Upper Palatinate.\u201d According to the Oberpfalz-Echo portal, 1,500 Ziegler employees work within the district alone.<\/p>\n

Impact on forest owners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ely Eibisch, President of the Bavarian Farmers' Association in the Upper Palatinate, voiced significant concern. \"For forest owners, not only in the Upper Palatinate, Ziegler is the most important buyer, and to my knowledge, there have never been any issues in this regard,\" he said in response to the Bavarian Agricultural Weekly (Deutscher Landwirtschaftsverlag).<\/p>\n

Eibisch acknowledged the financial rumors surrounding Ziegler but emphasized the importance of the insolvency administrator\u2019s decisions, which would take time due to the complexity of the corporate structure.<\/p>\n

\"For us as a professional association, it\u2019s crucial that forest owners and their organizations don\u2019t end up with unpaid claims in case the wood processing business goes bankrupt,\" he noted.
