The Ziegler Group holding company filed for insolvency at the Weiden District Court on Wednesday morning. Talks with potential investors and banks failed last week.<\/b><\/p>\n

The company, based in Pl\u00f6\u00dfberg, Germany, employs approximately 3,200 people across 34 locations, with 1,500 jobs in the Tirschenreuth district alone. Lawyer Volker B\u00f6hm has been appointed provisional insolvency administrator and aims to continue operations while exploring restructuring options.<\/p>\n

Stefan Ziegler, head of the Upper Palatinate-based Ziegler Group, remained confident about the company\u2019s future despite challenges. With around 3,200 employees, the industry heavyweight faced a difficult 2023 but anticipated improvement in 2024. Ziegler expressed optimism, noting that markets were stabilizing and predicting that within five to six years, the group would achieve strong profitability.<\/p>\n

The company's early days as a simple sawmill are a long way back. Today, \"wood baron\" Stefan Ziegler runs the largest sawmill in Europe, and the group reportedly has around 30 subsidiaries and 34 locations. Ziegler\u2019s rapid expansion since 2017 included ventures into prefabricated housing, insulation materials, and pellets, alongside acquisitions such as two Swedish sawmills. The company also expanded into non-core sectors, including hospitality, media, and logistics. These investments, while ambitious, heavily increased financial liabilities, which stood at over \u20ac407 million by 2022, including \u20ac326 million in bank loans. \u00a0Ziegler is the tenth largest sawmill group in Europe. Within two years, the group increased its sawn timber output from 1.6 million m\u00b3 (2022) to 2.04 million m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Revenue grew significantly, reaching \u20ac1.05 billion in 2022, but market conditions turned unfavorable. A collapse in the construction sector, declining demand for timber products, and underutilized facilities\u2014such as its insulation board factory running at just 40\u201350% capacity\u2014led to losses in 2023. Efforts to secure new investments and renegotiate terms with banks failed, forcing the insolvency filing.<\/p>\n

The restructuring process will likely involve divesting unprofitable operations to stabilize the company\u2019s finances. Employee wages are secured for three months under insolvency benefits. Local officials, including the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, are engaged in efforts to preserve jobs and support the region\u2019s economy, which is deeply intertwined with Ziegler\u2019s operations.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
