While countries like Austria and Germany report consistent price trends, others, such as Italy and France, highlight notable shifts influenced by recent market developments. Here's an update on the current state of pellet pricing in these countries for October and November 2024.

Austria: stable prices

In Austria, the price of a ton of wood pellets has remained stable at €289 as of October 2024. According to proPellets Austria, prices have been consistent for several months, with a secure long-term supply of Austrian pellets. This stability in pricing reflects a well-established domestic production network and a reliable energy source for heating in Austria.

Germany: Regional variations in pricing

In Germany, pellet prices have remained relatively stable, despite the colder temperatures leading into November. The average price for a ton of wood pellets is €279.12, according to the Deutsche Pelletinstitut (DEPI). However, there are regional differences in the country.

Regional breakdown for November 2024:

South Germany: €269.75 per ton
Central Germany: €280.78 per ton
North and East Germany: €289.69 per ton

For larger purchases, such as 26 tons, the prices decrease further:

South Germany (26 tons): €254.15 per ton
Central Germany (26 tons): €261.38 per ton
North and East Germany (26 tons): €273.97 per ton

The overall trend in Germany has been one of price stability, with no significant price increases recorded in the past few months.

Switzerland: Slight price increase

Switzerland experienced a small increase in pellet prices in October 2024, with the price for a ton of pellets reaching CHF 438.10 (approximately €453.78). This marked a 2.6% rise compared to the previous month. However, compared to the same period in 2023, Swiss pellet prices are 11.9% lower.

Current pellet prices for November 2024:

3 tons: CHF 452.88 (€469.89)
5 tons: CHF 437.39 (€453.32)
8 tons: CHF 424.13 (€439.19)
17 tons: CHF 405.73 (€420.57)

This slight increase in October is consistent with seasonal trends, though prices remain lower than they were a year ago.

France: fluctuating prices with an upward trend

In France, the price of wood pellets has shown an upward trend since the energy crisis of 2021. As of August 2024, the average price for a ton of wood pellets was €479. For a pallet of 66 bags (990 kg), the average price stood at €418. Individual 15 kg bags ranged between €6.50 and €12.45, depending on the retailer.

While prices can fluctuate daily due to market dynamics, bulk purchases like pallets or loose pellets remain the most economical choice. This pricing reflects a combination of factors, including increased production costs and heightened demand. Seasonal adjustments are expected as winter approaches.

Poland: stable prices with strong local production

In Poland, pellet prices have stabilized for the season. Certified pellets cost between €213 and €277 per ton (PLN 1,000–1,300). Non-certified options are available at lower prices but may lack quality assurance.

Poland benefits from a growing pellet production industry, supported by new plants utilizing local wood processing residues, such as sawdust. These smaller plants typically supply nearby communities within a 50 km radius. The significant import of good-quality Ukrainian pellets also helps keep prices competitive.

Despite the increased popularity of pellet heating systems under the "Clean Air" program, supply is sufficient to meet demand. If the winter is mild or average, heating costs are expected to remain steady, providing a cost-effective alternative compared to rising prices for gas, electricity, and district heating.

Italy: pellet prices return to 2021 levels

In Italy, pellet prices have significantly decreased since 2023, dropping nearly 30% compared to the previous year. This decline has brought prices back to their September 2021 levels, making pellets a more attractive heating option for households. As of September 2024, the average cost of a 15 kg bag is €4.55, a substantial improvement from the sharp price increases seen during the energy crisis of 2022.

The reduction in prices comes despite the removal of temporary VAT incentives earlier in 2024, which had been introduced to counter the price surges of previous years. Government measures and improved market conditions have helped stabilize prices, offering a cost-effective and sustainable heating alternative for the upcoming winter.

As the heating season intensifies, pellet prices across Europe showcase a blend of stability and distinct regional dynamics.
