Pressure is mounting on German Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem \u00d6zdemir to support the changes to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).<\/span> Last Thursday (November 14), the European Parliament approved several relaxations. The forest associations AGDW - The Forest Owners and the Family Farms Land and Forest have called on \u00d6zdemir in an open letter to support the European Parliament's position in the EU Agriculture Council. In the Cabinet and the Agriculture Council, the Federal Forestry Minister is expected to push for a swift decision in favor of the Parliament\u2019s resolution.<\/p>\n

The decisions of the European Parliament regarding the EUDR promise less bureaucracy for Bavarian and Austrian forest farmers.<\/p>\n

Minister \u00d6zdemir, however, criticized the approved changes. In his view, they \"once again create uncertainty for the economy at the final stage.\" Christine Schneider, the rapporteur for the European People's Party (EPP), rejected his criticism. She argued that the original law, which was supported by \u00d6zdemir and the Greens, had been poorly crafted, which had led to the current situation.<\/p>\n

The Council and Commission must agree to the changes by the end of the year; otherwise, the law will come into force at the turn of the year, rather than one year later as approved by the Parliament. It is expected that the trilogue negotiations will begin on Thursday (November 21).<\/p>\n

According to the forest associations, the approach chosen by Parliament, the \"zero-risk category,\" will benefit countries that already practice sustainable forestry. For countries that do not yet do so, an additional incentive is created to adopt more sustainable forest management practices. Resources for enforcing the EUDR can thus be directed to regions with high deforestation risks. \u00d6zdemir now has the opportunity to prove that he is serious about his call for reducing bureaucracy. With the changes, no new bureaucracy would be created in the first place.<\/p>\n

Pressure also comes from Hermann F\u00e4rber (CDU), the chairman of the Agriculture Committee. Although \u00d6zdemir has supported a one-year delay of the EUDR, he has rejected substantive changes to the far-reaching regulation. F\u00e4rber believes that these changes are necessary to reduce bureaucracy for the domestic forestry and timber industries. In particular, the proposal by Parliament to introduce a clearly defined zero-risk category for countries that have not experienced deforestation since 1990 would significantly reduce the documentation requirements for forest owners, according to the CDU member.<\/p>\n

Alongside Bavaria, CDU Agriculture Minister Werner Schwarz from Schleswig-Holstein also expects swift implementation. Forest farmers and timber traders need clarity and security before the end of the year. The German Raiffeisen Association has warned of a prolonged deadlock at the EU level if the Council and Commission do not accept the Parliament's changes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
