The European Parliament has voted to extend the deadline for implementing the EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) to December 30, 2025, while approving substantive amendments proposed by the European People\u2019s Party (EPP) group. These amendments aim to reduce bureaucracy, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and provide relief for sectors in low-risk countries. The German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH) and the Austrian Timber Industry Association have welcomed the decision, viewing it as a step toward practical implementation and improved competitiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

DeSH: \"Use the delay \u2013 make content adjustments\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Today's decision by the EU Parliament to extend the deadline for the EUDR is the right step for the industries and companies affected. After months of uncertainty, this decision not only creates the urgently needed time for companies to create the required conditions but also opens up the opportunity to integrate major concerns from practice into the further process in order to improve the regulation, its acceptance, and its implementation,\" commented Julia M\u00f6bus, Managing Director of DeSH.<\/p>\n

\"The introduction of comprehensive compliance and traceability systems requires time and resources, which pose major challenges for small and medium-sized companies. An extended implementation phase is therefore essential due to the lack of basic principles,\" M\u00f6bus added. \"Nevertheless, an extension of the deadline should not disguise the fact that the regulation also needs to be significantly adapted in terms of content. In its current form, the EUDR remains a bureaucratic monster whose consequences for long-term competitiveness are difficult to predict.\"<\/p>\n

She emphasized the importance of a differentiated risk assessment. \"The amendments proposed by the EPP group in the EU Parliament, which promise significant relief for companies from countries with little or no risk of deforestation, are the right way to go. Only through a balanced risk assessment with a corresponding adjustment of reporting obligations will the regulation be accepted and implementable in practice.\"<\/p>\n

Austrian timber industry welcomes repair of EUDR in Parliament<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"The timber industry welcomes the majority in the European Parliament to improve the content of the EUDR,\" said Herbert J\u00f6bstl, Chairman of the Austrian Timber Industry Association, commenting on the decision. \"The EU Commission's proposal to postpone the application of the EUDR was already half a step in the right direction. Now a majority in the EU Parliament is making it possible to take a big step toward reducing bureaucracy and increasing competitiveness. The substantive improvements to the EUDR that have now been adopted make it possible to make the EUDR applicable in practice and thus realistically achieve the correct goal of the regulation.\"<\/p>\n

J\u00f6bstl appealed to EU institutions to finalize the regulation with the parliamentary amendments intact. \"We ask that the EUDR be finalized with the improvements decided in the parliamentary process. This will reduce the burdens that would otherwise be almost impossible to manage when implementing the EUDR, especially for the many small and medium-sized family businesses in Austria and Europe. A revised EUDR can also advance the EU's bureaucracy reduction goals by avoiding unnecessary reporting obligations.\"<\/p>\n

Less populism in the debate<\/strong><\/p>\n

J\u00f6bstl also addressed the emotional debates surrounding the EUDR, criticizing claims that link the European timber industry to global deforestation. \"Some actors have lost their way in the jungle of EUDR regulations and confused the continents. Deforestation is not taking place in Europe or Austria. Strict forestry laws and responsible forest owners have ensured that our forests have been growing for decades,\" J\u00f6bstl explained.<\/p>\n

\"Our companies primarily source their wood from Austria and neighboring regions, and the entire timber industry has invested heavily in recent years to ensure a responsible supply of raw materials. Now that the EUDR's regulatory proliferation has been deemed unnecessary by the majority of the European Parliament, critics can see that sustainable forest management and wood use can have more positive effects on the climate and the economy than populist misinformation,\" he added.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
