The total trade volume rose by 11% to $3.27 billion, supported by a 7% increase in the average import unit price.

Logs show strong growth

China’s log imports totaled 8.7 million cubic meters in Q3 2024, up 5% compared to the same period last year. The trade volume for logs increased by 10% to $1.52 billion, with the average import price climbing 5% year-on-year. Softwood logs from New Zealand and South America dominated inventories at major ports, although their share declined to 71%, down from 77% in late September. Meanwhile, imports of North American Douglas-fir and hemlock logs surged, rising 37.5% to 480,000 cubic meters, accounting for 18% of overall inventories.

Sawn timber imports reached 6.81 million cubic meters in Q3, a modest year-on-year increase of 2%. However, trade volume grew significantly, climbing 11% to $1.75 billion. The average import price for sawn timber rose 8%, indicating steady demand despite higher costs.

Declining inventories and mixed pricing trends

China’s softwood log inventories at major ocean ports stood at 2.72 million cubic meters as of early November, a 4% decrease from late September. While European spruce logs and North American species saw inventory increases, radiata pine volumes fell sharply, declining by nearly 11%.

Market pricing trends in October were mixed. Wholesale prices in Taicang and Lanshan initially rose but retreated in the latter half of the month. Overall, radiata pine logs dropped by RMB 20/m³, while prices for logs used in panel production fell by RMB 40–50/m³. These price adjustments were influenced by stock dispersion and destocking by inventory holders, dampening broader market momentum.

Inventory reductions and softened shipping costs offered some relief, but market sentiment remains cautious. The Chinese government’s recent stimulus measures, including a $1.4 trillion debt package aimed at easing local government financial strains, have not significantly boosted confidence. Local government debt now accounts for 117% of GDP, presenting ongoing economic challenges. The once-thriving construction sector, a key driver of timber demand, remains subdued.

While declining inventories and steady off-take provide a foundation for cautious optimism, the Chinese timber market faces persistent headwinds. Until there is a marked improvement in consumer and construction sector sentiment, sustained growth in the timber market may prove elusive.

In the third quarter of 2024, China’s timber imports reached 15.52 million cubic meters, reflecting a 4% year-on-year increase.
