<\/span>The Finnish sawmill industry is feeling the pressure of rising log prices, which continue to outpace the increase in lumber prices, according to Sahateollisuus ry, the Finnish Sawmill Association. With little hope for improvement in final product markets by early next year, the industry is navigating a challenging economic landscape.<\/p>\n

In August, the stumpage price for logs was 18% higher than a year earlier, while export prices for lumber only rose by 5% over the same period, Sahateollisuus ry reported. \u201cThe high cost of logs combined with low prices in final product markets creates a difficult equation for sawmill companies,\u201d said Tino Aalto, CEO of Sahateollisuus ry, in a press release. He does not expect any significant positive turnaround in the market by the end of this year or early next.<\/p>\n

Production levels have risen modestly, with sawmill output reaching 8.1 million cubic meters from January to September, up 1% compared to the same period last year. Export volumes, however, have declined. From January to August, export volumes shrank by 4%, but thanks to a 5% increase in export prices, the total value of lumber exports remained steady.<\/p>\n

The primary export destinations in terms of volume have been Egypt, Japan, the United Kingdom, Estonia, China, and Germany. Among these, exports to Egypt, Japan, and Estonia increased year-on-year, with Japanese exports growing by 20% in the January-September period. Conversely, exports to China, the EU, the UK, and Algeria have decreased.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
