Challenges for European hardwood and prospects for 2025\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

EOS Vice President for Hardwood, Maria Kiefer-Polz, and ETTF President, Ad Wesselink, opened the conference, reflecting on the significant pressures that have weighed on the European hardwood sector. High costs in energy, labor, and equipment are reshaping the industry, and companies face the question of whether the market has hit its lowest point, with cautious hope for a turnaround in 2025.<\/p>\n

Experts presented on various topics, from market trends to regulatory impacts, with a particular focus on the economic landscape and raw material supply. Christoph Schneider from the Economica Institute noted that rising global tensions are further complicating business stability. Meanwhile, Silvio Sch\u00fcler from the Federal Research Center for Forests highlighted that Europe's growing proportion of deciduous forests offers a stable raw material base, though climate change and pests threaten forest health. Adapting forest management to these new challenges remains essential to maintain a reliable supply of hardwoods.<\/p>\n

Overseas market dynamics: the U.S. and China\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael Snow of the American Hardwood Export Council highlighted challenges faced by U.S. hardwood producers. Production continues to decline in response to weak domestic demand, while exports, although slightly outperforming the domestic market, have been dampened by reduced demand from China. James Xu of Shanghai AM Forest Products emphasized the importance of innovative sales approaches, such as utilizing local social media, to sustain market presence in China. Xu noted that Chinese buyers are cautious amid the country's demographic shift toward an aging population, as well as a steep decline in housing construction, both of which signal a potential long-term reduction in hardwood demand.<\/p>\n

To reduce dependency on China, Snow advocated for market diversification, pointing to the steady demand from Canada, Mexico, and the EU. While these regions collectively absorb 22% of U.S. hardwood exports, they cannot fully offset China\u2019s substantial share. Meanwhile, Vietnam\u2019s reliance on U.S. species like Red Oak and Walnut offers growth potential, though its economy remains vulnerable to global market fluctuations.<\/p>\n

Impact of EU legislation on hardwood forestry\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Harald Mauser from the European Forestry Institute discussed the implications of EU legislation for the forestry sector. Since 2019, the EU has implemented 35 new policies affecting the industry, with more in the pipeline. While the drive toward a bio-based economy presents growth opportunities for hardwoods, stringent forest protection laws could curb timber harvesting. Mauser noted that recent political shifts, including the diminished influence of Green parties in the EU Parliament, could lead to a regulatory shift toward growth-oriented policies and simplified regulations, signaling a potential easing of regulatory burdens for the sector.<\/p>\n

A key regulatory topic was the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), introduced by Franz-Xaver Kraft of DG Wood. Industry representatives, including certification organizations like PEFC and FSC, welcomed the anticipated delay in the regulation\u2019s implementation, as this will provide more time to prepare for increased due diligence obligations.<\/p>\n

Researchers from Austrian institutions showcased innovative uses of hardwoods, including hybrid constructions and new material concepts. Snow, from AHEC, outlined how U.S. hardwood exports have diversified in recent years, with Red Oak, White Oak, and Walnut gaining popularity in premium furniture and interior design markets. However, the growing preference for Yellow Poplar in Vietnam, coupled with a reduced focus on traditional species in other regions, shows the changing dynamics in consumer preferences.<\/p>\n

Climate change impacts and forest adaptation <\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Silvio Sch\u00fcler highlighted climate change\u2019s impact on European forests, emphasizing shifts in species distribution and threats from pests like the oak lace bug and ash disease. Faster growth rates, driven by warmer temperatures, have shortened the growth cycles of hardwood species from 120-250 years to 80-150 years, affecting the quality of logs. Consequently, producing premium-grade hardwood timber has become more complex, increasing costs. In response, forest managers are shifting toward planting resilient species like oak and beech while adapting forestry practices to mitigate pest threats and promote forest health.<\/p>\n

The event underscored the complex, intertwined factors shaping the hardwood industry, from evolving market demands and climate-driven forestry adaptations to regulatory pressures.
