Despite this, operating costs for Polish sawmills surpass revenue from product sales. Adding to the pressure, Poland\u2019s imports of softwood lumber from Germany have surged over 20% compared to last year. What factors contribute to this situation?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Record German exports \u2013 primarily to Poland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between January and August 2024, Germany exported 6.2 million m\u00b3 of softwood lumber, marking a 6% decrease (387,000 m\u00b3) from the same period in the previous year\u2014a level last seen in 2019. However, exports to Poland rose by 21% during this time, reaching 185,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>The simplest explanation is price: wood is more affordable in Germany than in Poland, putting Polish sawmills at a competitive disadvantage. For comparison, exports to other destinations, such as the United States, dropped 15% to 1.4 million m\u00b3 (22% of Germany's total exports). Exports to France, India, and China also fell by 10%, 12%, and 23%, respectively, while exports to Austria (539,000 m\u00b3), the Netherlands (467,000 m\u00b3), and Belgium (419,000 m\u00b3) maintained similar levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sawmills below the profitability threshold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sawmill industry in Poland is operating at a loss, with production costs exceeding revenues. Profitability in the sector fell to -1.7% in the first half of 2024, 5.8 percentage points lower than the average in the broader industrial processing sector. Among wood-related industries, only parquet flooring manufacturers reported a more significant decline, with profitability at -3.4%.<\/p>\n<p>High domestic wood prices, among the highest in Europe, are a major cause of these financial difficulties. Additionally, upcoming technical changes to wood standards proposed by the State Forests raise concerns within the wood industry. If these changes are enacted, costs may increase further, exacerbating the already challenging financial situation for Polish sawmills.<\/p>\n<p>The outlook is clouded by ongoing restrictions from the Ministry of Climate and Environment on wood resource availability, which could continue to impact the sector's growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most expensive wood in the region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wood companies across Poland are experiencing record losses and severe cash flow challenges, stemming from a loss of competitiveness in comparison to other regional players.
