However, the increase in the price of softwood next year will be more moderate than before. Fellings and trade volumes on the wood market are increasing as industrial wood use increases. The gross annual income of private forests clearly breaks the previous records, estimates Pellervo economic institute (PTT) in its forest industry forecast.

"Demand in the wood market has remained strong and will continue to grow next year, when the use of wood in industry increases. This strength is reflected in the record-breaking wood sales revenues of private forests," says forest economist Olli Korhonen.

This year, the average annual price of logs in Finland will rise clearly, about eight percent from last year. The stronger price development of birch bark still reflects its limited availability.

The price development of softwood in Finland remains more bullish than log wood, and the annual average price will increase this year by a fifth compared to last year. Next year, the price development of softwood will stabilize, when the market finds a new balance after the shock caused by the reduction in imports. The average price still rises by around five percent.

Demand increases trade volumes

Strong demand in the wood market will increase the total number of vertical stores this year by more than ten compared to last year. The background is the increase in demand, the anticipated need for wood and the use of wood also in the energy sector. Despite the uncertainties in the sawn timber market, the trade volume of log wood will increase in the same proportion as fiber wood.

This year, the number of vertical trades will clearly increase more than the number of fellings, which increases buyers' vertical warehouses. Next year, the number of vertical stores will continue to rise by around six percent, with a slightly greater emphasis on softwood.

Industrial wood use and felling are increasing

In the forest industry, the use of wood has decreased over the past couple of years, but this year the amount of use will turn to a slight increase. Wood use will increase by about three percent when the production of the chemical forest industry increases. Wood is also used in the wood product industry this year slightly more than last year.

"Next year, forest industry production will continue to grow, especially in the mass industry, because production at Metsä Group's Kemi bioproduct factory has recovered and Stora Enso's Oulu paperboard line is starting up. This increases the use of wood by approximately six percent. The development can be seen in the increase in logging," says research director Paula Horne.

This year, the felling amount will increase by about four percent, which is based on the fact that the amount of imported wood remains low, along with the increase in wood use. Next year, the amount of felling will continue to rise by around four percent.

The gross carrying amount income of private forests is breaking records again

The gross cash income of private forests rose to a record 2.6 billion euros last year, which was particularly affected by the increase in the average price of wood. This and next year, forest owners' income from wood sales will continue to rise, driven by the increase in fellings, trade volumes and the average price.

The rise in wood prices in Finland will continue this year and next year as well.
