<\/span>Russia's Segezha Group is actively exploring new export channels and routes to adapt to the evolving landscape of international trade. The company is transitioning its focus from traditional European markets, which were crucial until the onset of the Ukraine conflict, to newRuss markets in India, China, and Africa. This shift is part of Segezha's comprehensive import substitution strategy for 2024-25, aimed at mitigating the impact of Western sanctions and the withdrawal of foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n

The expansion of logistics routes is a key aspect of Segezha's strategy. The company has reported increased variability in its logistics, which facilitates faster product delivery to international clients. Beyond utilizing the Eastern Polygon and the Northern Sea Route, Segezha is developing new pathways through the southern direction, specifically focusing on the port of Novorossiysk and the Dostyk\/Altynkol border crossing in Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n

Since beginning shipments of forest products to China via the Dostyk station last year, Segezha has gradually ramped up its volumes. In the first nine months of 2023, these shipments accounted for just 2% of total cargo movement from the Northwestern Federal District, a figure that increased to 25% in the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n

Andrey Yudin, Managing Director of Logistics at Segezha Group, noted, \"Utilizing the transit corridor through Kazakhstan allows us to deliver targeted volumes of finished products to China, which is more efficient than the costly sea transport via St. Petersburg. Although transportation through Kazakhstan can be more expensive and may involve complex loading conventions, we are committed to diversifying our logistics routes to optimize costs and enhance service for our clients.\"<\/p>\n

The dynamics of cargo movement through the Eastern Polygon have shifted as a result of these new routes. In the first nine months of 2023, Segezha sent over 91% of its cargo from the North-West to the Far East and China. However, this percentage dropped to 67% in 2024, indicating a strategic realignment of shipping practices. Meanwhile, the share of sea freight through the Baltic Basin has remained stable, with 7% in 2023 and 8% in 2024.<\/p>\n

Yudin emphasized that Segezha's enterprises are set to export all planned cargo to both international and domestic markets in 2024.
