<\/span>The German wood processing company Pfeifer is responding to the rising demand for cross-laminated timber (CLT) with expanded production at its Schlitz facility, while also increasing local staffing. With projects like the timber parking garage in Wendlingen and the \"Food Garden\" in Frankfurt\u2019s Main-Taunus-Zentrum, Pfeifer highlights the potential of wood as a sustainable building material.<\/p>\n

Pandemic, energy crisis, economic downturn - the multiple challenges of recent years have placed a heavy burden on both private households and companies. The weakening economy is hitting the construction sector particularly hard. One exception is timber construction, which is experiencing a significant upturn worldwide. In 2023, the share of timber construction in Germany for new residential buildings was 22%, and for non-residential buildings it was as much as 23.4%. Sebastian Eggel (in the left photo), plant manager in Schlitz, says: \u201cDespite the general economic downturn, we were able to keep our production stable and are ramping it up again to meet the increasing demand for cross-laminated timber.\u201d<\/p>\n

The advantages of timber construction \u2013 from the rapid construction method to the ability to store CO2 \u2013 are contributing to the fact that the importance of this building material is continually growing. \"The future belongs to timber, especially in urban construction, densification and renovation,\" Eggel is convinced.<\/p>\n

The expansion of production is accompanied by a significant increase in personnel. Pfeifer plans to increase the number of employees in the production area by a third to around 90.<\/p>\n

The growth in timber construction is evident in projects completed with Pfeifer CLT. In Frankfurt, the \u201cFood Garden\u201d at Main-Taunus-Zentrum\u2014a new restaurant hub built entirely from timber\u2014features five free-standing buildings on 9,000 square meters and is set to open in spring 2025.<\/p>\n

Another significant project is a five-story wooden parking garage in Wendlingen am Neckar, where Pfeifer supplied 1,100 m\u00b3 of CLT. This pioneering structure, designed for recyclability, is made almost entirely of wood except for its stairwells and driving surfaces. Additionally, the Fuchshofstrasse Primary School in Ludwigsburg, built with Pfeifer CLT, won the 2024 Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Timber Construction Prize for its innovative approach to sustainable architecture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
