With the start of the heating season in October, the price of wood pellets in Germany remains low this month. According to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), a tonne of wood pellets costs an average of €279.26. This is a slight increase of 2% compared to September. Pellet heaters currently pay 5.59 ct/kWh of climate-friendly heat. The price advantage compared to natural gas is 44%, and compared to heating oil it is 41%.

Stable pellet prices thanks to mild weather

Extreme price stability prevails on the online markets. The platforms heizpellets24.de and holzpellets.net show an almost identical average price of just under €249/t for loose goods (6 t) on October 22nd. However, bagged goods are significantly cheaper at heipellets24 at €304/t than at holzpellets.net, where they cost just under €330/t. Mild temperatures apparently delay significant price increases at the start of the heating season.

According to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), pellet prices rose slightly in October from a low level. "Even if the temperatures are not yet too autumnal, experienced pellet stove users know that they should not put off refilling their stocks too long, despite low prices," says Martin Bentele, Managing Director of DEPI. Bentele advises consumers to buy products with the ENplus certificate. ENplus ensures the quality of the pellets from production to storage, so that the heating or pellet stove runs smoothly. If consumers use high-quality regional pellets, this not only protects the climate, but also the heating system.

Regional prices

According to DEPI, the following regional differences in pellet prices will arise in October 2024 (for a purchase quantity of 6 tonnes): In southern Germany, the price is €273.49/t, followed by central Germany with an average price of €278.87/t. In northern and eastern Germany, the price is €284.73/t.

Larger quantities (26 t) will be traded in October 2024 at the following conditions: South: €258.60/t, Center: €263.98/t and North/East: €265.27/t (all prices including VAT).

The heating season has begun, but price increases for wood pellets are still a long way off.
