The wood and furniture production sectors saw the sharpest rise in insolvencies.

Despite GDP growth and improvements in some industries, sole proprietors in particular are struggling with rising fuel and energy costs, and reduced export orders. The combination of high operating costs, shrinking margins, and increased labor expenses has worsened conditions for many businesses.

The wood products industry (excluding furniture) experienced a staggering 167% year-on-year increase in insolvencies, followed by furniture production, with a 117% rise. Coface predicts the total number of insolvent companies could reach 5,000 by the end of the year.

Grzegorz Sielewicz, Chief Economist at Coface in Poland, notes that Poland’s economy remains highly dependent on foreign markets, particularly Germany, which continues to face recessionary pressures.

The Polish wood industry is currently grappling with a significant market slump, severely impacting companies within the sector. Experts attribute this downturn to a combination of factors, including the economic crisis and stringent monetary policy decisions that have hindered sales performance. Additionally, labor shortages and rising production costs are creating further challenges for industry representatives, dampening their outlook in this turbulent economic climate.

Poland’s wood sector has faced declining sales for several years, but recent developments have intensified these struggles. In January 2024, the Ministry of Climate and Environment imposed strict protections on ten forest areas, with plans to extend these restrictions to limit or halt timber harvesting. Such measures could lead to substantial losses, with some companies facing bankruptcy if timber harvesting is curtailed by 20%. Despite appeals from the industry for assistance in light of the deepening crisis, the State Forests have yet to respond.

The loss of competitiveness in Poland's wood industry can be attributed to various factors, including nearly 20% inflation, high energy costs, rising minimum wages, increased corporate taxes, and restricted timber harvesting. These conditions have led to a decline in both domestic and international orders, compounding the sector's woes. Many companies have reported a sales drop of between 40% and 70% this year, prompting a shift in focus toward the domestic market.

Concerns regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine further exacerbate the situation, as companies near Poland’s eastern border hesitate to invest amid uncertainties. Additionally, there is apprehension that reopening borders with Belarus could lead to an influx of cheaper wood, further undermining local businesses.

In response to these mounting challenges, many companies are cutting costs and reducing production to avoid selling at a loss. Some are even pausing operations in hopes of more favorable conditions in the future. Meanwhile, larger companies are reevaluating their marketing strategies, hiring professional agencies for rebranding and targeting efforts.

However, the industry continues to face significant challenges, including rising raw material costs, persistent inflation, and uncertainties linked to geopolitical tensions. Given the wood and furniture sectors' vital role in Poland's economy, discussions with the government are anticipated to explore potential interventions to safeguard the industry. Without prompt action, the outlook remains bleak, with further declines expected if current conditions persist.

In the first three quarters of 2024, 4,465 Polish companies declared insolvency, marking a 23% increase from the same period in 2023, according to a recent report by Coface.
