After months of stagnation, China's log import market is showing signs of recovery, with October prices for A-grade logs surpassing <\/span>$120\/m\u00b3 at the wharf gate for the first time in seven months. This boost is due to several factors, including lower shipping rates and slightly higher in-market sales prices. Current log offers vary depending on the port, ranging from the mid to high $120s in some areas, while southern regions see lower rates, with prices around $110\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s on-port log inventory has reportedly dropped by 700,000m\u00b3 over the past month, bringing the total to around 2.7 million m\u00b3. However, this figure may be influenced by vessel delays caused by poor weather conditions in September, and the actual inventory could stabilize as October progresses. Offtake has increased to 70,000m\u00b3 per day, though a temporary dip is expected following the Golden Week holiday.<\/p>\n

In a significant development for the broader economy, the Chinese government has introduced its most aggressive stimulus package since the COVID-19 pandemic. This $1.07 trillion package aims to stabilize the real estate market, which has been in decline, by offering measures such as cuts to mortgage-to-debt ratios and increased funding for banks. Despite the positive market response, including the largest single-day gain in the Shanghai Composite in 16 years, the overall real estate sector remains fragile, with concerns about declining property values and a shrinking population.<\/p>\n

While these economic measures are helping to support log demand, the long-term sustainability of the recovery remains uncertain.
