During a joint meeting at Rettenmeier Holding AG in Hirschberg, the board and management of the two associations exchanged views on the current challenges and formulated joint demands regarding the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation, the amendment to the Federal Forest Act, the transition to building with wood, and the future of wood energy.

"While the climate-friendly transformation in the economy and society is progressing slowly, forests and wood already offer solutions for a sustainable construction and energy transition. But instead of fully utilizing this potential, the wood industry is facing increasing restrictions that make a course correction urgently necessary," said host Dr. Stephan Lang, CEO of Rettenmeier Holding AG and President of DeSH. "To secure the contribution of the forest and wood industries for the future and provide the value chain with reliable framework conditions and a long-term perspective, we have formulated a joint appeal that addresses the current challenges and calls for consistent political action," explained Prof. Dr. Andreas Bitter, President of AGDW.

Long-term perspectives through consistent policies

The fourth Federal Forest Inventory, published this week, made it clear that forests are unlikely to cope with the challenges of climate change without active care. "Contrary to the planned restrictions under a new Federal Forest Act, forest owners are dependent on political support. To make the forest climate-resilient, flexible solutions are needed that help preserve the forest in the long term according to regional conditions, secure existing ecosystem services, and mobilize available wood potential," the associations emphasize.

At the same time, political commitments to sustainable wood use must be backed by targeted measures: "From building heating, renovation to new construction, wood can make a significant contribution to CO2 reduction. To achieve this, it is important not only to ensure the long-term security of wood energy as part of the heat transition but also to remove regulatory obstacles that disadvantage wood construction compared to other building methods. Additionally, the use of wood in construction should be promoted through the expansion of federal funding programs for sustainable construction," the associations demand.

EUDR – Extension of the deadline is not enough

Although AGDW and DeSH expressly welcome the EU Commission's proposal to postpone the EUDR, a substantive revision of the regulation remains necessary: "The fact that there is no deforestation risk in Germany, as in many other countries worldwide, within the meaning of the EUDR, is still not considered. The impending burdens on the forestry and timber industries are therefore not off the table. We call for forest owners in countries where no deforestation is taking place to be exempted from individual reporting obligations."

With a joint appeal, the associations The Forest Owners (AGDW) and the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH) are calling for reliable political framework conditions for forests and wood.
