The economic turnaround for the Finnish forestry industry has already occurred, but a major leap forward is not yet in sight<\/span>, according to the latest economic outlook from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).<\/p>\n

In terms of export value, this year is slightly better than last year for the forestry industry, and significant statistical growth is expected for next year.<\/p>\n

According to Luke, gross stumpage revenues will exceed three billion euros for the first time next year, and the operating profit of private forestry is expected to grow to around 210 euros per hectare.<\/p>\n

Harvest growth focused on private forests<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next year, logging will increase by four percent to 64 million cubic meters. Growth will be concentrated in private forests, as companies and Mets\u00e4hallitus (Finnish state-owned forest enterprise) will increase their logging by a couple of percent.<\/p>\n

Finnish forestry industry investments are shifting the focus of logging to northern Finland, where there are more untapped harvesting opportunities compared to the south.<\/p>\n

Next year, the rise in stumpage prices will stabilize but continue modestly. Softwood log prices are expected to rise by 2-3 percent, and birch logs by four percent. Pulpwood stumpage prices will increase by 5-6 percent.<\/p>\n

Imports are expected to grow by ten percent. The main countries of origin for imports, in order of importance, are Latvia, Estonia, and Sweden, which together account for 90 percent of imports. Meanwhile, Finland is expected to export a couple of million cubic meters of wood.<\/p>\n

Bark beetle damage lower than expected<\/strong><\/p>\n

The construction sector has been facing major difficulties, but a small recovery is expected in Europe next year, with momentum likely to pick up by 2026. Bark beetle damage in Central Europe has been less severe than anticipated, which has created a shortage of logs and kept prices high.<\/p>\n

Sawn timber exports to China are being hit as the country has increased its imports from Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n

The recovery in construction will also support demand for softwood plywood. Birch plywood is performing better than softwood plywood, but log availability is limiting production.<\/p>\n

Pulp prices retreating from record highs<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pulp market in Finland is in a state of anticipation and uncertainty. Prices started to decline in late summer, and the price difference between short- and long-fiber pulp is unusually large.<\/p>\n

The price of softwood pulp reached a record 1,600 euros per ton this year, and short-fiber pulp exceeded 1,400 euros.<\/p>\n

The Kemi mill is expected to return to normal production next year, leading to an increase in production and exports. The average export price is expected to rise slightly.<\/p>\n
