Mets\u00e4 Group plans to close the Suolahti birch and softwood plywood factories in central Finland. The closure is justified by the low profitability of the factories. The company has started change negotiations regarding the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The intention is that the production of the birch plywood factory in Suolahti would end by the end of the first quarter of 2025, and the production of the softwood plywood factory by the end of 2026 at the latest. The planned measures apply to the entire personnel of the Suolahti factories, approximately 370 people in total.<\/p>\n

\"The closing of the factories is planned in phases so that the employment of personnel within Mets\u00e4 Group can be better enabled. The personnel of the new Kerto LVL factory in \u00c4\u00e4nekoski would be recruited from the Suolahti factories, and the permanent personnel would be offered the opportunity to work in other Mets\u00e4 Group units,\" says Jaakko Anttila, branch manager of Mets\u00e4 Wood .<\/p>\n

According to Anttila, the effects of closing factories on the use of wood are quite small. Birch logs have not been used much in recent years. The production of softwood plywood will continue a little longer in Suolahti, and the softwood logs used to make softwood plywood can be shown in the future at the \u00c4\u00e4nekoski kertoputehta. It should start in 2026.<\/p>\n

The annual production capacity of Suolahti plywood factories has been 35,000 cubic meters of birch plywood and 160,000 cubic meters of softwood plywood.<\/p>\n

After the closure, Mets\u00e4 Wood, part of the Mets\u00e4 Group, will no longer make plywood in Finland at the Punkaharju factory. In addition, the company makes plywood in Estonia. There are no changes coming to these factories, says Anttila.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
