Norway's sawmill industry is under immense pressure due to historically high softwood sawlog prices, a situation exacerbated by challenges in Sweden\u2019s logging operations. Over the past year, the price of softwood sawlogs in Norway has surged by 25%,<\/span> with the cost of spruce rising from NOK 629 (approx. \u20ac54) to NOK 802 (approx. \u20ac69) per cubic meter.<\/p>\n

While these soaring prices may benefit forest owners, they are creating significant difficulties for the wood processing industry. \u201cIt\u2019s gold for forest owners, but not for the sawmill industry,\u201d the paper notes.<\/p>\n

\"Timber prices keep climbing\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

For companies that process wood products without owning their own forests, the situation is critical. \u201cWe now have the highest nominal timber prices ever. The prices for softwood sawlogs just keep going up, while prices for finished products are nowhere near keeping pace,\u201d says Erland L\u00f8kken, CEO of Bergene Holm, a family-owned wood processing company, to Dagens N\u00e6ringsliv.<\/p>\n

After booming sales during the pandemic, Bergene Holm saw its revenue drop by 20% last year, resulting in a financial loss. This year, the situation has worsened even further.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weak Norwegian krone is good for timber exports in isolation. We export a lot of timber, about 40\u201350% of our volume, and the weak krone helps improve profitability there. But it also puts pressure on timber prices. Additionally, reduced logging in Sweden and zero imports from Russia into Europe have created an imbalance in raw material supply, posing major problems for our industry,\u201d L\u00f8kken explains.<\/p>\n

Swedish logging drops by 7%<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to preliminary statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency, logging in Sweden decreased by 7% in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cTimber prices are sky-high. The highest ever,\u201d says Swedish forestry expert Johan Freij to Dagens N\u00e6ringsliv.<\/p>\n

This is true even when adjusted for inflation. \u201cTimber prices are now at their highest level since the Korean War in the 1950s,\u201d Freij adds.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
