As log prices continue to soar in Sweden, forest owners' associations that own industrial operations find themselves in a challenging position. On one hand, rising log prices attract members to deliver their timber, while on the other, maintaining a profitable industry is essential for ensuring member satisfaction through profit-sharing. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the arrival of autumn, several companies in Sweden, including S\u00f6dra, VVDS, and Nordic Wood Supply, have raised their softwood log price lists, while Holmen has increased prices in G\u00f6taland. Sveaskog, which operates extensively across the country, has also adjusted its prices upward.<\/p>\n

In regions like V\u00e4sterbotten and Norrbotten, Sveaskog's price list now offers around 750 kronor per cubic meter (approximately \u20ac66) for standing timber (fub) at final harvesting. In contrast, Norra Skog ranges from 426 to 511 kronor (\u20ac38-\u20ac45), SCA between 449 and 559 kronor (\u20ac40-\u20ac49), and Holmen from 488 to 517 kronor (\u20ac43-\u20ac46).<\/p>\n

However, published prices do not fully reflect the actual market rates, which tend to be higher. However, the extent of this difference is challenging to ascertain since many surcharges are not publicly available.<\/p>\n

Norra Skog, for example, recently provided an additional 65 kronor (\u20ac5.75) per cubic meter in supplementary payments for 2023. If profit-sharing for 2024 mirrors this, competitors may not need to exert themselves too much to attract members.<\/p>\n

Although Sveaskog is not the dominant player in the region, its publicly available price list could potentially help push prices upward.<\/p>\n

Forest owners' associations in Sweden with their own industrial operations face increasing competition for raw materials, complicating their operations. These associations adhere to a principle of equal treatment, preventing them from utilizing surcharges and premiums as private companies do. Yet, they must also ensure their industries have sufficient raw material supply.<\/p>\n

These associations must strike a delicate balance between high log prices\u2014encouraging members to deliver timber\u2014and a profitable industry that keeps members content with their profit-sharing. However, even in prosperous times, the actual sums distributed to each member are not astronomical.<\/p>\n

Historically, profitability in Swedish sawmills has been a concern, with only the years immediately following the pandemic showing unusual strength. Currently, however, the situation is less favorable. Holmen's Wood Division reported a profit margin of just one percent in the first half of this year, and in late August, the company announced plans to reduce production and personnel at its Kroksj\u00f6n sawmill, partly due to its less modern and efficient setup compared to other facilities in the group.<\/p>\n

S\u00f6dra Wood incurred losses last year and has implemented production changes this year that have rendered some staff redundant. Sawmilling has ceased at Klevshult, and three processing facilities have been closed.<\/p>\n

In better times, the underperformance of certain Swedish sawmills or operations may not have raised significant concerns. However, the current landscape has changed. More cutbacks and adjustments are likely as companies streamline operations to enhance profitability, achieve economies of scale, and ensure that their various units align with the company\u2019s strategic direction.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
