Between January and July 2024, softwood lumber exports from the European Union to Japan have experienced a remarkable growth. According to recent figures provided by Eurostat, Japan imported softwood lumber worth EUR 422.8 million, reflecting a substantial 48% increase from EUR 284.9 million in the same period in 2023. <\/span>This upward trend continues the strong performance noted in pre-pandemic years, highlighting a return in EU\u2019s influence in the Japanese timber market.<\/p>\n

The total volume of softwood lumber exported to Japan also saw significant growth, rising from 954,105 cubic meters in January-July 2023 to 1,449,437 cubic meters in the same period in 2024, representing a 52% increase.<\/p>\n

Key Exporting Countries<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finland and Sweden remain the leading exporters of softwood lumber to Japan. Finland's exports grew from EUR 89.3 million in the first seven months of 2023 to EUR 115.8 million in 2024, marking a 30% increase. The volume of exports also increased from 350,257 cubic meters to 439,937 cubic meters, a rise of 26%.<\/p>\n

Sweden's exports demonstrated a strong performance as well, increasing from EUR 96.1 million to EUR 139.7 million, which is a 45% increase. The volume exported rose from 326,185 cubic meters to 484,843 cubic meters, reflecting a 49% increase.<\/p>\n

Austria also contributed to this growth, with exports increasing from EUR 31.9 million to EUR 46.8 million, a 46% rise in value. The volume of exports from Austria increased from 79,236 cubic meters to 124,288 cubic meters, a 57% increase.<\/p>\n

Romania's exports rose from EUR 16.8 million to EUR 40.7 million, marking an impressive 143% increase. The volume exported jumped from 40,821 cubic meters to 108,146 cubic meters, a remarkable 165% increase.<\/p>\n

Germany's exports also saw significant growth, rising from EUR 20 million to EUR 33.9 million, a 70% increase in value, while the volume increased from 49,692 cubic meters to 98,513 cubic meters, a 98% rise.<\/p>\n
