The European Commission's proposal to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year has determined a range of responses from the European wood industry. While some sectors welcomed the extension as necessary to ensure proper compliance, others stressed that the regulation still needs fundamental revision to address its practical challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Austria: A call for bureaucratic reduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Austria, the timber industry has expressed strong approval of the postponement. Herbert J\u00f6bstl, Chairman of the Timber Industry Association, remarked that the extension was long overdue and highlighted ongoing bureaucratic issues. \"The timber value chain has not been understood,\" J\u00f6bstl said, arguing that the EUDR places unnecessary burdens on European companies when large-scale deforestation primarily occurs on other continents. He urged the European Commission to focus on reducing bureaucracy and revising the regulation to make it more practical. \"We need to ensure that countries with sustainable forest management are not hindered by excessive administrative burdens,\" he added.<\/p>\n

Germany: Calls for further delay and simplification<\/strong><\/p>\n

The German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Cem \u00d6zdemir, commented: \u201cI welcome the fact that the EU Commission has given in to our request and wants to postpone the start of application of the EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) by twelve months. With a smooth implementation now, the EU Commission can restore lost trust and create acceptance for the regulation - among our companies, among consumers and among producers worldwide of, for example, coffee, cocoa or wood.\"<\/p>\n

In Bavaria, there are similar sentiments, though with calls for a more extended delay. Siegfried J\u00e4ger, President of the BBV forestry division, believes the one-year postponement offers an opportunity to push for broader revisions. \"A two-year delay would be more appropriate to address the regulation's excessive bureaucracy,\" J\u00e4ger said. He warned that without significant changes, the regulation would place unnecessary strain on Bavaria's agriculture and forestry sectors.<\/p>\n

CEI-Bois welcomes decision<\/strong><\/p>\n

In response to the EC proposal, Silvia Melegari of the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries (CEI-Bois) said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy to see that the EU Commission has taken into account the concerns expressed by the wood industries and all commodity sectors in the EUDR\u2019s scope by providing additional time to comply with its requirements. Many clarifications are also being given in EUDR [guidance] material, which is good. And while timber harvested today must have geolocation information if it will be sold in the EU from December 30, 2025, the [industry] has an extra year to sell everything that does not have this information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweden: Positive reception with caveats<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden\u2019s forest industries welcomed the postponement but emphasized the need for further clarifications. Viveka Beckeman, CEO of Skogsindustriern, acknowledged the extension as beneficial but urged the European Commission to address uncertainties, particularly regarding traceability requirements for processed wood products. \"The forest industries support the regulation\u2019s goal to halt deforestation, but the requirements must be clear, proportionate, and globally applicable,\" Beckeman stated. The Swedish industry has been proactive in proposing solutions but expects more concrete guidance on how to meet compliance standards in practice.<\/p>\n

Finland: Optimism for additional time<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Finland, the wood industry praised the Commission's decision. Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry's forestry director, Karoliina Niemi, expressed gratitude for the additional time, noting that it would provide smaller operators with much-needed breathing room. \"The extra time is crucial for ensuring compliance without causing unnecessary disruptions to the industry,\" Niemi said, commending the Finnish government for its role in advocating for the postponement.<\/p>\n

Italy: Support with reservations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Italian wood-furniture companies also expressed support for the delay, though they echoed concerns about excessive bureaucracy. FederlegnoArredo, representing Italy's wood and furniture industries, welcomed the one-year extension but emphasized the need for balanced solutions that protect both the environment and businesses. \"We stand by Europe\u2019s side in the fight against deforestation, but the regulation must allow companies to truly contribute without being overwhelmed by bureaucratic demands,\" the organization stated.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
