<\/span>The European Commission has proposed delaying the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), extending the deadlines for compliance by one year. Large companies will now have until December 30, 2025, while micro and small enterprises will have until June 30, 2026, to comply. The proposal has been submitted to the European Parliament and the Council for approval by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the EU Commission admits that, in light of feedback from international partners on their state of preparations, it will give the parties concerned more time to prepare. Global partners in particular have repeatedly expressed concerns about their state of preparation, most recently during the week of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n

\"Although the tools for implementation are technically ready, this extension will allow a smoother phasing-in process, ensuring all stakeholders are adequately prepared,\" the Commission said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The EUDR aims to curb global deforestation by requiring businesses to ensure that products such as coffee, cocoa, soy, and beef imported into the EU are not sourced from deforested areas. The new timeline provides an opportunity for stakeholders, particularly in commodity-producing countries, to adapt to the complex requirements of the law, which includes tracking the origin of products and ensuring compliance with EU standards.<\/p>\n

Most countries ranked as \u2018low risk\u2019: The Commission has also clarified the principles it will apply to the EUDR benchmarking and highlighted that, following the methodology applied, a large majority of countries worldwide will be classified as \u2018low risk\u2019. This means that, in many cases, operators will have to draft a simplified due diligence instead of a full due diligence. \u201cThe Commission is intensifying dialogues with most concerned countries, which will feed into the speedy finalization of the country benchmarking system through a proposed Implementing Act by 30 June 2025,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Commission said that the Information System for the diligence statements will be ready to accept registrations in November and will be fully operational in December.<\/p>\n

The decision was met with relief by several wood industry sectors, including the pulp, paper, and printing industries. Beatrice Klose, Secretary General of Intergraf, stated: \"The delay allows us more time to prepare and support the printing industry in its compliance efforts.\" Similarly, Jori Ringman, Director General of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (Cepi), said the postponement would ensure better implementation and a stronger impact on deforestation prevention.<\/p>\n
