<\/span>Moelven Byggmodul AB has recently announced layoffs at its shed manufacturing facility in Kil, Sweden citing weak demand as the driving force behind the decision. This marks the third notice in the past two years, emphasizing the prolonged struggle within the market for crew sheds.<\/p>\n

The downturn, which primarily affects 73 employees\u201464 collective workers and 9 white-collar employees\u2014is attributed to economic sensitivity in the segment, particularly affecting rental companies who form the core of Moelven's customer base. Despite hope for a future turnaround, CEO Henrik Asp admitted that production rates had already been gradually reduced, yet market demand continued to decline, forcing the company to take this difficult step.<\/p>\n

Asp mentioned that while the Swedish market has been sluggish, business had remained somewhat stable due to demand from Denmark. However, even that has now dwindled, making it necessary for the company to issue notices to its employees. Union negotiations are expected to follow this announcement.<\/p>\n

Despite the current challenges, Asp remains optimistic about the future, pointing to potential large projects that could bring the market back to life. The company is ready to scale up production once the market recovers, a shift that Moelven believes is inevitable, though uncertain in timing.<\/p>\n

This is the second such setback for Moelven this year. Earlier in 2024, the company\u2019s subsidiary, Moelven V\u00e4nerply AB, was forced to reduce plywood production at its Otterb\u00e4cken mill due to weak market demand, which resulted in the layoff of 18 employees. The situation at V\u00e4nerply, much like in Kil, reflects broader challenges across the construction sector, where declining demand has placed immense pressure on companies to scale down operations to maintain sustainability. The ongoing low activity in construction has proven to be a persistent issue for Moelven\u2019s business units in Sweden.<\/p>\n

The company, however, continues to invest in its facilities, preparing for future growth when market conditions improve. Despite the current cuts, Moelven Byggmodul remains optimistic that the tide will eventually turn, with several promising deals on the horizon, potentially leading to a ramp-up in production once again. As of now, Moelven\u2019s production facilities in S\u00e4ffle, Torsby, and its offices in Karlstad, Stockholm, and Sandsj\u00f6fors remain unaffected by these cutbacks, with the company focused on positioning itself for a market rebound.<\/p>\n
