The European Union's softwood log and lumber exports to China have seen a significant decline during the first seven months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This shift reflects not only the evolving demand patterns in the Chinese construction sector but also the broader European economic landscape affecting material supplies and prices<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In the first half of 2024, softwood log exports from the EU to China fell by 28%, reaching a total value of EUR 153 million, compared to EUR 213 million in 2023. This drop is largely attributed to reduced demand in some of the major European exporting countries such as Sweden and Germany. Sweden, which exported EUR 64.5 million worth of softwood logs in 2023, saw a sharp decline of 46% in 2024, down to EUR 34.6 million. Similarly, Germany's log exports dropped by 33%, falling from EUR 52.9 million to EUR 35.3 million.<\/p>\n

The decline in softwood lumber exports to China was even more pronounced. EU exports of softwood lumber plummeted by 39%, from EUR 322 million in 2023 to EUR 196 million in 2024. Germany, which has traditionally been a major exporter, saw its lumber exports drop by a dramatic 48%, from EUR 161 million to EUR 84 million.<\/p>\n

However, despite the overall downward trend, several countries demonstrated resilience and growth. Poland experienced a 26% increase, reaching EUR 37.4 million in softwood lumber exports. Latvia almost doubled its exports, with an impressive 93% rise, reaching EUR 19.8 million. France also saw moderate growth, with an increase of 21%, pushing its exports to EUR 11.1 million.<\/p>\n

Chinese construction sector still slow<\/strong><\/p>\n

There has been no significant change in residential construction activity in China, largely due to the high availability of new housing stock. As a result, demand for lower-grade logs\u00a0 has decreased, while demand for higher-grade logs (A grade), particularly longer lengths, has risen. This shift is driven by increased demand from the furniture and packaging sectors, rather than construction, which may represent a longer-term trend.<\/p>\n

Domestic construction numbers are also lower, with consents down 22% compared to 2023. Construction Minister Chris Penk recently stated that building is currently \"too difficult and expensive\" and has committed to reducing red tape and lowering building costs. This may provide some relief for homeowners, as the costs associated with building consents can add significant expenses to construction projects.<\/p>\n
