Wood prices in Germany are directly tied to market demand, which has been severely affected by the ongoing construction crisis. <\/span>The German wood industry is facing significant challenges, not only from the slump in construction but also from the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which threatens to create further disruptions.<\/p>\n

Construction sector woes impacting the German wood market<\/strong><\/p>\n

Germany's construction sector remains in a deep recession, causing serious repercussions for the wood market. The German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association reports that 40% of wood industry companies are currently experiencing difficult business conditions, with little hope for improvement in the near future.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the introduction of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) could result in major disruptions to wood markets and weaken domestic industries.<\/p>\n

Economic forecasts signal ongoing challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Current economic forecasts paint a bleak picture for Germany's future development. According to the ifo Institute's autumn report, \u201cThe German economy is stuck in a crisis, weighed down by both cyclical and structural factors. After a 0.3% contraction last year, the inflation-adjusted GDP is expected to stagnate this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is troubling news for the domestic wood market, which has managed to hold up surprisingly well despite the crisis. However, the signs of trouble are evident. By June 2024, permits for 106,654 new housing units had been issued, about 28,500 fewer than during the same period the previous year.<\/p>\n

The number of orders in residential construction fell by 12.6% in nominal terms in the first half of the year. While the decline in order backlogs has been halted, the overall level remains 8.6% lower in real terms compared to the previous year, according to the German Construction Industry Association's economic report.<\/p>\n

Stabilizing wood prices despite the crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the challenging environment, prices for construction timber have recently stabilized or only slightly declined, according to the Federal Statistical Office's price data. Many forest owners are focusing on processing beetle-damaged wood and dealing with storm damage.<\/p>\n

Currently, prices for spruce in strength class 2b+ range from 80 to 85 euros per cubic meter for quality grade B (BC). Beetle-damaged wood fetches up to 70 euros per cubic meter. Demand for pine wood varies by region, with prices mostly ranging between 65 and 70 euros per cubic meter for quality grade 2b+.<\/p>\n

The sale of industrial wood is proceeding normally, matching supply levels. However, the energy wood market is weak due to high inventory levels, making it difficult to sell additional quantities outside of contracts. Similarly, demand for firewood is relatively low, and prices are dropping.
