Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to propose a way out of the deadlock in the enforcement of the new regulation to combat deforestation, a promise she made to her group colleagues at an EPP meeting this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

MEP and European People's Party (EPP) spokesperson for agriculture, Herbert Dorfmann, told Euractiv that such a proposal could be presented in the next few days.<\/p>\n

\"The President has met with the EPP Group and said that within a few days she will propose either a postponement or another interim solution,\" he said, stressing that reopening and revising the regulation should also be considered.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the situation we find ourselves in, entry into force is impossible,\u201d Dorfmann added.<\/p>\n

The law in question aims to ensure that products imported into the EU - such as cocoa, livestock, coffee and soy - do not come from deforested areas. In addition, it requires companies to provide geolocation data for farms as proof of compliance.<\/p>\n

Von der Leyen's comments at the group meeting could explain the influx of letters the Commission received on Thursday (19 September) regarding the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).<\/p>\n

The Social Democrats have reiterated their support for maintaining the current implementation timetable. The Greens EU group sent von der Leyen a letter with similar demands on Thursday evening, which Euractiv has seen.<\/p>\n

Likewise, Renew MEPs Pascal Canfin, the liberal coordinator for the Environment Committee (ENVI), and Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, his colleague in the International Trade Committee (INTA), wrote yesterday to Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, the head of the Green Deal, reiterating the above-mentioned demands.<\/p>\n

All three groups are calling for the immediate publication of long-overdue guidelines and FAQs to help companies finalise their preparations to implement the rules. The Commission promised to publish these documents in March 2024, along with a benchmarking system ranking countries according to their deforestation risk. However, neither has been published yet.<\/p>\n
