The lumber industry in North America continues to face challenging market conditions, leading to further curtailments in operations. <\/span>Two major announcements last week from Tolko Industries and West Fraser highlight the ongoing pressures that mills are encountering.<\/p>\n

Armstrong Tolko mill down for two weeks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting September 16, 2024, Tolko's Armstrong Lumber Division in British Columbia is facing a two-week shutdown, with operations scheduled to resume on October 1. The company cited a combination of factors leading to the temporary curtailment, including the limited availability of economic fibre, weak market conditions, and the burden of increased U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n

\"Unfortunately, the availability of economic fibre in B.C. combined with weak market conditions and increased U.S. tariffs continue to have an impact on our operations,\" said Tolko spokesperson Chris Downey. \"As we\u2019ve seen recently, the entire industry is feeling this pressure and while we prefer to be fully operational, difficult decisions are needed to ensure we are sustainable for the future.\"<\/p>\n

Though the mill is temporarily closed, Tolko's regional fibre scales will remain open. Earlier this year, the company had paused its harvesting and hauling activities across the Southern Interior of B.C. to manage log quality and control costs, impacting many logging contractors. While these activities have resumed, similar challenges remain in the Cariboo region, where high inventory levels are still causing concerns.<\/p>\n

West Fraser to indefinitely curtail Lake Butler, FL, sawmill<\/strong><\/p>\n

On September 19, 2024, West Fraser announced the indefinite curtailment of its Lake Butler sawmill in Florida by the end of the month. This decision will impact approximately 130 employees and reduce the company's U.S. lumber production by around 110 million board feet annually.<\/p>\n

West Fraser\u2019s decision comes amid high fibre costs and a soft lumber market that have made operations at the Lake Butler sawmill unsustainable. \"The indefinite curtailment of Lake Butler sawmill better aligns West Fraser\u2019s lumber capacity with demand,\" the company stated in a press release. The company plans to mitigate the impact on employees by offering them opportunities at other West Fraser locations.<\/p>\n
